[ENG-SPN] Peter Pan Syndrome and the Temple of Debod / El síndrome de Peter Pan y el Templo de Debod

Even our Temple of Debod, that unquestionable gift that the Egyptian government made to Spain for its help in the construction of the Aswan Dam and the relocation and preservation of numerous similar buildings so they would not be covered by floodwaters, has not been spared the presence of individuals who, possessed by Peter Pan syndrome or the eternal childhood, have left their mark carved into the ancient stones, alongside the original marks of the stonemasons—remember that, in Ancient Egypt, the teams of stonemasons or workers bore the names of the different gods of their extensive Pantheon: Horus Team, Osiris Team, and many others—as well as the pilgrim graffiti, usually crosses, that they left behind as they passed through Egypt on their way to Jerusalem and the Holy Places.

Which goes to show, apart from the fact that the Court of Miracles, that is, Madrid, is not immune to it either, something that has not changed over time and that the wide-awake, though misunderstood, Oscar Wilde already had the opportunity to succinctly analyze in that small marvel of his prolific work, entitled "The Importance of Being Earnest": that is, we are Ego.

But above our ego, our detachment from a heritage—both historical, artistic, and cultural—that we should see for what it truly is, a treasure, the Temple of Debod, with all the power of its ancient magic, with its dark chapels and the linear sculpture that defines a good part of its interior walls and brings us closer to the sovereign beauty of that outstanding civilization established on the banks of the Nile, continues to be not only one of the most picturesque places in Madrid, but also an excellent vantage point, where every appointment and every encounter always becomes a story in the metaphorical memory of a city that never ceases to amaze.

Incluso nuestro Templo de Debod, ese incuestionable regalo que el Gobierno egipcio realizó en España por su ayuda en la construcción de la presa de Asuán y el traslado y conservación de numerosos edificios similares para no ser cubiertos por las aguas, no se ha librado de la presencia de individuos, que, poseídos por el síndrome de Peter Pan o el eterno infantil, han dejado su huella labrada en las milenarias piedras, junto a las marcas originales de los canteros -recordemos, que, en el Antiguo Egipto, las cuadrillas de canteros o de trabajadores llevaban el nombre de los diferentes dioses de su extenso Panteón: Cuadrilla de Horus, Cuadrilla de Osiris y un largo etcétera- así como también a los grafiti de peregrino, generalmente cruces, que éstos dejaban a su paso por Egipto en dirección a Jerusalén y los Santos Lugares.

Lo que viene a demostrar, aparte de que la Corte de los Milagros, es decir, Madrid, tampoco se libra de ello, algo que no ha cambiado a través de los tiempos y que el despierto, aunque incomprendido Óscar Wilde, ya tuviera ocasión de analizar sucintamente, en esa pequeña maravilla de su prolífica obra, titulada ‘La importancia de llamarse Ernesto’: es decir, somos Ego.

Pero por encima de nuestro ego, de nuestro desapego hacia un Patrimonio, tanto histórico, como artístico y cultural que deberíamos ver como en realidad es, un tesoro, el Templo de Debod, con toda la fuerza de su antigua magia, con sus oscuras capillas y con la escultura lineal que define buena parte de sus muros interiores y nos acercan la soberana belleza de aquella sobresaliente civilización instalada a orillas del Nilo, continúa siendo, no sólo uno de los lugares más pintorescos de Madrid, sino también, ese excelente mirador, donde cada cita y cada encuentro, resulta siempre una historia en el metafórico libro del recuerdo de una ciudad que nunca deja de sorprender.
