Cruise Ship Passing the Belém Tower at Sunset
The Belém Tower, also known as the Tower of St. Vincent or the Torre de Belém in Portuguese, is located on the banks of the Tagus River just at the mouth of the Port of Lisbon. It was built in the 16th century under the reign of King John II and is a prominent representation of the Manueline style of Portuguese late-Gothic architecture. This castle on the shore played a major role in the Age of Discoveries and the exploration of the New World from the 16th to 18th century. Many prominent explorers and pioneers left the Port of Lisbon and this was the last thing they saw when they left and the first thing they saw when they arrived back home.
I thought it was very cool seeing the modern cruise ship passing this legendary tower. I couldn't help but think about all of the ships that have sailed through this port over time. The old sail-boats with massive masts and crews of plenty setting out on their unknown voyages. The merchants working their way up the coast creating civilizations along the way. Lisbon was a product of the Silk Road's ancient network of trade routes. It's a city rich with history and I'm very glad I had the chance to explore it.
