This IS NOT A Stone (#85)
"When nature became scarce, romantic art declared nature sacred. The key painting of that religion is that of Caspar David Friedrich.
One sees a lonely figure on the beach, looking out over the sea. When he is still standing there he no longer sees an overwhelmingly pure space but a 'waste land', plastic, dead birds and oil stains in which clouds no longer mirror themselves.
Landscape art is now primarily a prayer to the beautiful world that has been and as such a prayer for good nature management. The clean appearance is still there, superficially observed, painted beautifully, but that painting portrays a cracked vase. So, please feel free to be puritan."
