Sunday Mornings, Cars, And Caffeine - Durban, South Africa

Looking back through my recent post history, it's clear to see that my attendance at local car meets has being going through a bit of a dry spell. Granted, there is something automotive happening pretty much every weekend in this city, but most of the events don't grab my attention. Having to drive across town to look at some average cars I've seen plenty of times before gets dreary very quickly. Also, the event posters generally just suck - chaps, please hire better designers to promote your events.

Fortunately, this past Sunday offered an opportunity to fuel my inner petrolhead, as there was a breakfast run planned with a whole host of unique automotive art on display. Since the finishing point was a mere one mile from my house (seriously, actually less than a mile), I skipped the run part and opted to just attend the get-together at the end.

Naturally, I had to take my camera along to capture the cars that showed up, and I came back with a selection of photos to share with you all. So, please enjoy my latest octane-driven photography escapades.

To start with, here's an overview of (nearly) all the cars in attendance. Due to the parking lot reaching capacity, a few unfortunate owners had to park around the back of the building. Regardless, there was a great selection up here anyway.

The Toyota GT86 crew commanded a strong presence at this gathering, with no fewer than 5 models in attendance. While all were mostly standard (engine wise), they all had their own unique cosmetic alterations.

Here's something you don't see everyday - a BMW 8 Series. I've only seen one of these in South Africa before, and have no doubt the price commands quite a premium. Next to it is a much newer M3.

Time to shift our focus to the only two yellow cars in the car park. Firstly, a Renault Megane Sport. I've never really been a fan of these Renaults, but I guess they do have some decent underdog performance characteristics. Still, not a car for me.

The second (and last) yellow car comes in the shape of this Lamborghini Huracán. Probably the most "exotic" car to show up, the baby Lambo easily drew the largest amount of attention.

Fortunately, the owner was happy to let us poorer folk get up close and personal with his car, even allowing some of the kids to sit inside. I took the opportunity to snap a quick photo of the interior between spectator changes - it really does look rather fighter jet inspired inside there doesn't it?

Shifting away from an Italian bull to an Italian horse, this Ferrari 599 GTB was parked only two spaces over from the Lambo. Even though it's much older in years, the bright red Maranello monster still makes a bold statement wherever it goes, and I'm not surprised these are starting to appreciate in value.

Since we can't all afford the finer Italian machinery, here's something a bit more achievable. Arguably the best M3 model ever produced by BMW, parked off next to a Honda Civic Type R. After seeing the Type R in action during some aggressive driving situations, I'm thoroughly impressed at both the handling and performance credentials - Honda really did get it right.

I couldn't resist taking a few extra photos of this 8 Series... it just has such an old-school cool appeal to it. And pop up lights - we obviously can't forget those.

While the Lambo is certainly a head turner, the Ford Mustang also manages to attract a fair amount of attention anywhere it goes. It's worth noting that the Mustang was never officially sold in South Africa until 2016, and since then, it's become one of the most popular sports cars in the country, probably helped out by the epic aural sensation of the burbling V8.

Not too far away, a strong contender for the V8 soundtrack award came in the form of this BMW M3. While appearing stock at first glance, there was certainly some serious work done to the pipes of the Bavarian brute, emitting a noise violent enough to wake the dead. And if not the dead, I'm sure it woke up plenty of people during the spirited drive to the breakfast location.

So much choice...so little time. Which would you choose?

And just like that, we've reached the end of this little Sunday morning car gathering. With summer just around the corner here in the southern hemisphere, I can only hope that the earlier sunrises and warmer temperatures motivate people to arrange more events like this. They certainly help make a weekend anything but dull.

Thanks for looking!
