Branches inserted in the snow on the paths through the frozen river serve to ensure that the traveler does not lose his way in the dark.

    And for the explanation too, can you tell us also how wide is this river during the winter times?
    I have seen frozen lakes and smaller rivers but non of them had branches inside.
