Trip to France - Part 23 - Ancient Theatre of Fourvière, Lyon
Entry is free. Plaques in English and French explain the significance of what you are seeing. The theatres are in a remarkable state of preservation. Performances are still sometimes held here.
There are stunning views across Lyon towards the Alps. The funicular (included in Lyoncard) takes you there from Viruses Lyon station.
The visit is best combined with th Roman Museum built into the hillside. Entry to be his is free with a Lyoncard but you will need your passport to borrow an audioguide.
The Basillica is a short walk away. The Christian Cultural Centre in the nearby Montee St. Bartholomew, housed in 17th. Century convent, may also be of interest. It tells the story of the early Church in Roman times and includes the cell where some of the early martyrs were reputedly held. Entrance is free with the Lyoncard.
The Roman Amphitheatre is in a different location on the Presqu'isle. It is also well preserved.
