La chlorophylle accumulée dans les cellules de son limbe (organe situé à l’extrémité du pétiole qui capte l’énergie lumineuse) lui permet d’activer ses mécanismes vitaux.
C’est ce qu’on appelle la photosynthèse : grâce au soleil, la feuille produit des glucides en transformant le gaz carbonique de l'air et hydrogène de l'eau en un dégagement d'oxygène.
