The shrub is pest and disease-resistant and can sustain the heat of summer. The edible nuts simply drops-off the ground and grow the following summer by itself. When the fallen nuts are not gathered from the ground, they can grow so easily and become a garden nuisance because the roots grow deep under the soil and is difficult to remove.

It´s amazing to see their deep burgundy color when they begin to sprout from its branches in Spring. Just like the Lippizan horses brown in color upon birth and when they grow bigger they get that white grayish color all over. We have this plant in our garden for more than 20 years now. It´s doesn´t need extra care, can be easily maintained and just add a bit of feed and they grow to about 10-15 feet tall. We cut its branches late Fall to keep its shape.

In late Spring, I sometimes cut the branches to add them to my wildflower arrangements. The deep color adds contrast to the bouquets I make for my home.
