Dronelife - Salt Marshes from a drone - Part 1

This is the Stiffkey salt marshes. In crazy Norfolk talk Stiffkey is actually pronounced 'Stoo-key'. Ahh the funny folk of Norfolk. If this isn't something you've heard of before, have a look here at the lovably weird Norfolk slang.

I've written about Stiffkey a number of times now. It is my favourite place to fly, for three reasons:

1. It's beautiful
2. It's home to lots of birds that aren't interested in having a go at the drone
3. I'm a hydrologist...

A hydrologist?. Yeah, I work on rivers and water projects for a living! Rivers are pretty much for my favourite subject for drone photography and the drone is a great way to study these meandering landforms. This is why I keep going back, its not too far from home and the views are always breathtaking. What do you think? Do you have similar environments in your country?

There is so much variety in the environment here. This is because this is a tidally influenced environment. Twice a day the sea comes in and fills it all up and then as it retreats, the water creates these river channels in the mudflats. The area is full of these rivers, or rivulets and small ponds too and they are teeming with life. So much so that it is designated as an area of Special Scientific Interest.

The image below is a particularly striking meander, it isn't a typical 'loop'. It's quite unusual for such 'linear' streams to occur due to the chaotic way water flows. It's a beautiful main channel with other small channels feeding into it, known as tributaries.

If you visit North Norfolk, there are lots of great campsites and quality pubs. Be sure to visit Stiffkey and if you have a drone, take it with you!
