The Bello Family - 4 Generations Portrait

In the immortal words of John Hannibal Smith “I love it when a plan comes together”!

Sometimes it takes a lot of effort to bring a photographic vision to reality. Sometimes you have an idea and the gear - but no models.

I don’t know where you’re from but here in NYC having a father in your life is RARE. So when someone gave me the concept for this picture it’d require me to find not 1 father but 3, that are still alive, and in speaking terms.

I told my wife of the idea and she thought it was very creative. Then it dawned on her that her co-worker has a great grandfather. She pitched him the idea and they were all game.

TIP - When shooting families it’s important to make sure everyone has matching clothes. It shows unity, makes the pictures dynamic and one person doesn’t stand out (because they’re wearing a color that stands out from everyone else).

So here’s the plan came together:

• Find models.
• Green screen (although not 100% necessary it’ll make removing the background effortless).
• Shoot each of them holding the frame - with careful consideration of the placement of their hands.
• Import the images to the computer and remove the green background.
• Find a background (in this case it was a textured paper).
• Add each person in the frame.
• Slap a sepia filter and voila!

Now keep in mind the actual shoot and computer work took 10 minutes - but it took me over 10 years to get to this point!
