Effigy - New Logical Fallacy ProposalsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #philosophy8 years ago (edited)

It has occurred to me lately that a specific tactic is becoming very commonplace in political discourse, so I'm proposing a new logical fallacy to describe it:

Effigy - Substituting a groups' actual position or argument with a distorted, exaggerated, or misrepresented position of the argument with the intent of discrediting that group.

If this sounds similar to a Straw Man Fallacy that's because it is, I actually paraphrased this Straw Man definition to start this.

The difference is that it's targeted towards a group, and the intent isn't to disprove the position but rather to discredit the group!

So in an attempt to give a non-political example I'll use the X-Men. In short the X-Men fight for the co-existence of humans and mutants. Magneto, their main nemesis, might commit an Effigy Fallacy by stating something like:

"The X-Men must not be allowed to eradicate mutant kind!"

In this example Magneto would be arguing against mutant genocide, which is the Straw Man, but in implying that's the X-Men's position he's actually committing the Effigy Fallacy by making the X-Men seem like genocidal maniacs.

It could be noted that in the X-Men universe many humans actually do want to see humans eradicated, and Magneto might even have a sincere belief that attempting co-existence with humans would lead to disaster. However that still doesn't change the fact that the X-Men's position is not that of mutant genocide. In fact, the X-Men fight mutant-hating humans nearly as often as they fight Magneto!

There's a good chance this idea needs some refinement, so please share any thoughts in the comments below!

This is really a great little analogy using the X-men. You are a very gifted writer. Have a good one @telos .

The Men must not be allowed to oppress woman kind

The white Men must not be allowed to oppress everyone.

The 98% must not be allowed to oppress the lbgt community.

The sane must not be allowed to oppress the insane.

Effigy?.....yeah, I think it has merits....

Effigy would be the tool used by those majority groups to justify oppressing those minority groups.

So if 51% of the population were insane, they would then become the oppressors?

No mixing threads.

And no, there's a difference between being a majority and oppressing others.

No mixing threads?
Hope you are not trying to oppress me?

Just wanted to keep this on topic, anyone reading this (not that anyone is) will just be confused... :P

Great wording my friend @telose
