Gut-Brain Psychology: The Human Being Is A Superorganism

Gut-Brain Psychology: Rethinking Psychology From the Microbiota–Gut–Brain Axis | 11 September 2018

frontiersin.org | Mental disorders and neurological diseases are becoming a rapidly increasing medical burden. Although extensive studies have been conducted, the progress in developing effective therapies for these diseases has still been slow. The current dilemma reminds us that the human being is a superorganism.

EARTH CUSTODIANS: human being is a superorganism.... You will not read that very often as psychiatry and psychology still proclaim their superiority over human thinking, and the efficiency of their pharmacology . The more medicated humans are the worse they get. And not only psychologically.

They have even succeeded in redesign and selling "mindfulness" into their own terms and parameters. Mindfulness is “sweeping the country because it works,” says Kelly, who estimates 20 percent to 30 percent of Fortune 500 companies have some sort of mindfulness training. (see links at bottom page) Those at the top will always monetize anything they can and corrupt it.

Only when we take the human self and its partner microbiota into consideration at the same time, can we better understand these diseases. ... Existing research indicates that gut microbiota plays an important role in this transition. According to gut-brain psychology, the gut microbiota is a crucial part of the gut-brain network, and it communicates with the brain via the microbiota–gut–brain axis.

That the gut-brain connection is being now recognized is a great step forward, but such a research could have been available a long while ago if pharmaceuticals hadn't take over the markets and corrupted the minds of so many professionals. When profit is involved, people tend to follow the more profitable trend. That is why monetarism is a such a scourge. If people wouldn't do so, our financial frameworks would fall apart -- or remain a profit-less economy.

Undoubtedly, gut-brain psychology will bring great enhancement to psychology, neuroscience, and psychiatry. Various microbiota-improving methods including fecal microbiota transplantation, probiotics, prebiotics, a healthy diet, and healthy lifestyle have shown the capability to promote the function of the gut-brain, microbiota–gut–brain axis, and brain. It will be possible to harness the gut microbiota to improve brain and mental health and prevent and treat related diseases in the future.

Earth Custodians do not think that things will change that fast, unless pharmaceuticals accept their failure, but how realistic is that? Instead we may expect that Bigpharma will begin to sell synthetic pills mimicking the nutrients of a full organic diet.

Or wait, soon we could hear that a gut-screening is as necessary as a colonoscopy (which has been proven not only unreliable but dangerous), and that prescriptions of microbes will be for sale at your pharmacy around the corner. We can rest assured that they will find several tricks profit from the gut microbiota.

Well, here they are! A quick search validated our assumptions. They have been at it for a while already... in fact they are developing treatments that tell the bacteria and microbes how to behave, so they won't impede the brain connection with the gut. And of course the market is booming as they are more and more companies interested in drugging our microbes.

It is too soon to tell what the consequences of interfering at that level with Nature will be, but the latter will be dire (again). Though Bigpharma scientistists are also working on more natural but "extremely lucrative" treatments. So that's good, right?

Psychology is a discipline that targets the rules of human psychological phenomena and behavior. Unfortunately, it seems like the more we know about human psychology, the more we realize we do not know. Until recently, not a single mental disorder had an established definite biomarker, either physiological, biochemical, or genetic. The application of psychology seems to lag behind other disciplines, and mental illnesses remain medical challenges. In the last few decades, the number of patients with mental disorders and neurologic diseases has increased rapidly, causing a great escalation of medical burden

The field has become completely irrelevant and is bound to eradicate itself. No if but when. Freud and Bernaise were successful because they studies only address(ed) the effects of the environment and the engineering of society.

But further, when we look into humans' psyche, we can definitely see that all life stories, although different, translate the same malaise: lack of understanding the purpose of life and unsustainable coercion levels. That is what it all boils down to essentially.

Psychology and Psychiatry are not going to address any of that as they would lose their grip on society. Let's get real! If we are serious about bettering people's interactions, that's is where we must start. Can you imagine a world 80% less neurotic than what we have today?

Human society has changed significantly since the industrial revolution, which was followed by tremendous variations in diet, lifestyle, and health care. Although the genes of the human have not changed much, the important component of the superorganism microbiota has undergone tremendous change

Well, let's face it: everything we have been told is wrong anyway. The loss of foods with high nutrients is a major culprit. And healthcare is beyond repair.

In terms of dietary structure, refined carbohydrates dominate the total food intake; the intake of meat, fat, sugar, and salt has increased rapidly, whereas the intake of dietary fibers has decreased sharply. However, high-fat diets and high refined carbohydrate diets, which are rich in sucrose and fructose, perturb the gut microbiota

By now we'd all know that sugar is poison... just wander any supermarket: 75% of what is sitting on the shelves has sugar in it. The article says that grains and fibers are highly recommended to balance our mircobiota but let's make sure that it is pesticides/chemicals/GMOs free of course.

The OP article gives extensive details on what affects our guts and psychology, in fact it is a 50 page or so analysis, whose jargon is quite accessible. We give it 2 thumbs up!

(2106) Drugs for your gut bugs are on the horizon.... Eating red meat, for instance, increases a person’s risk of heart disease in part because of the gut microbes. They convert a chemical in red meat (and eggs and dairy), called choline, into a chemical called trimethylamine (TMA). TMA becomes trimethylamine N-oxide, or TMAO, which can cause hardening of arteries and increased heart attack risk..... https://www.statnews.com/2016/04/15/drugs-gut-microbiome/

Can you freeze your fat away? (2016)
The procedure is often marketed under the brand name CoolSculpting and costs range from $750 to $1,500 a pop depending on how much fat you want to target.

Sort:

That reminds me of that Star Wars quote. I have a funny or strange feeling about this. People go with their gut. It's like their heart or like a second brain. But like you said, there is that relationship between the gut and the brain and specifically with bacteria in the gut.

I prefer holistic medicine. We are super organisms. I know about some of this. I know about the gut talking to the brain but I have not thought about the bacteria in the gut at that deep of a level. I kind of get it but do the bacteria communicate to the gut which then communicate to the brain? I was thinking about that, but I guess maybe not. But instead, the gut let's the brain know how things are going in the gut based on the condition of the good and bad bacteria and everything else.

I know that we are like a superorganism like you said and yet this article got me to really think about it at a deeper level. We have a garden we eat from. People can take care of themselves a lot more than they think, generally speaking and some exceptions may apply in some minority cases, not in the majority of cases. Not most of the time. Yeah, people are getting sucked into the theories of mental health, psychology, and everything. They focus too much on symptoms while ignoring root causes, sources, based on objectivity, logic, common sense, from a complete holistic perspective.
