A question you've probably asked

Which social network is most important for building your personal brand?

I get asked this all the time.

And basically there are two correct answers…

First of all, you need to choose two networks.

Second, it depends on what you want to achieve.

If for example, you are looking to advance your professional career - get a promotion or a better job - then you need to concentrate first on Linkedin and then on Twitter.

However, if you have a business that sells to consumers then I would probably advise you to build a large Instagram following and then grow your Twitter account.

The one network you probably shouldn’t worry about too much is Facebook.

Why?

Simply put, because it’s the hardest network to leverage unless you want to spend money on advertising.

So in a nutshell here’s my two second take on the current social media “lay of the land”:

Linkedin - without a doubt the premier professional social network. Everyone needs to have an optimized and well thought out Linkedin profile. If you want to drive sales leads, this can also be a very powerful place to do so.

Twitter - the traffic driving engine of all the social media sites. Data shows that twitter even beats Linkedin for B2B marketing! If you’re going to be publishing content on the internet, you need an engaged twitter following.

Instagram - the most loyal social network. The people on instagram rock! They get the quirks and they interact. If your business is in fashion or has a visual aspect to it, I highly recommend that you cultivate an audience on Instagram.

Pinterest - really awesome for e-commerce. Pinterest is more friendly to marketers and drives a ton of traffic. If you want to sell on the internet this is the place to be.

Facebook - the most powerful advertising platform on the planet. If you’re willing to pay for traffic this is the place to go. However, if you’re looking for free, organic engagement it’s going to be a long hard haul! It is, however, great for building a community of clients from a customer service standpoint.

Snapchat - if you want to grow an audience of 14 year olds, this is a good place to start. Some marketers are having success, but I wouldn’t recommend that you invest much time and effort here.
