Independence Day Reminder

For all my American friends, here is a little Fourth of July reminder about what we're really celebrating on Independence Day.

On July 4, 1776, the thirteen American colonies declared themselves free of British rule, objecting to injustices imposed on them from across the pond. Things like:

  • Being forced to pay unreasonable taxes
  • Being denied representation in parliament
  • Being subjected to martial law and standing armies
  • Being required to foot the bill for the sovereign's wars of aggression
  • Being ruled from afar by people who had no understanding of the realities of their regional and local lives and economies

Wow, so glad we don't have to deal with any of that anymore!

So on this 242nd annual commemoration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we should all take a moment to appreciate the fact that we are a free people who are never subjected to the tyrannies of an overgrown state.

Heh. Heh. Heh.

Yup. We're living the dream, alright. ;-)

Kennedy tried a presidency ruled by conscience and doing what's right. We know what that got him. RIP. Sigh.

People idolize JFK far too much. He, McKinley, Garfield, and Lincoln were not martyrs for liberty by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't idolize presidents. I read far too much history for that.

I have studied a good bit regarding Kennedy's administration, what he was actively trying to do, and why it got him killed. And he was FAR more concerned with improving the opportunities and lives of common citizens than any president who followed him.

Yes, I had areas of disagreement with the man, but overall, he did a far better job than he is generally given credit for by modern leaders or periodicals.

And, despite his infidelity to his wife, he was a far better man, of far better character, than nearly any living elected official in our country today.

He was courageous enough to try to bring the truth to light. And it got him killed.

And as soon as the "Founding Fathers" won, they set about imposing new taxes and burdensome regulations of their own. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss - well, except this time we have the magic of democracy!

...yay?
