People Photography by World Capture week# 21: Passerby in Chinatown

in #partiko5 years ago

This is my entry for #peoplephotography week# 21 hosted by @worldcapture.

During my bus ride through Chinatown, I was surprised to see this elderly monk walking by himself in late afternoon. Usually monks are not allowed to go shopping like lay people. I think he probably came from the countryside and was on his way to a temple nearby to find a place to stay while in Bangkok.

Whenever I see an elderly forest monks along the road in the outer provinces, I would ask them to stop so that I could offer them done food and drink. Monks cannot go about buying themselves breakfast and they have to finish their main meal of the day before noon. If they miss the time, then they have to wait till the next day to be able to eat again. This is Buddhist monks’ rule to keep them dependent on the local community and to be monitored by them. If the monks are very diligent and good practitioners of Dhamma and meditation, local people would admire and show their respect by offering them daily food and catering for their survival needs. So, Buddhist monks could become spiritual leaders in villages and guide villagers towards right livelihood.

Wishing you peace, good health and prosperity.

Cheers.

I didn't know that. Seems like a smart system

Yes! So, bad ones would not get much food or support from the community! That’s the idea of quality control in the past!

Good that you respect the old traditions :-)

Thank you! If the old tradition is still relevant and useful, but not causing any harm, I would try to preserve that tradition. Sometimes things have got to change as they have become irrelevant and do not serve any useful purposes.
But Thai people are too self-indulgent and tend to spoil themselves by using tradition as an excuse!!

Cheers.

Seeking balance is always the way..

Yeah! A harmonious way too...
I hate these AI auto correction! It keeps playing havoc with my text! Very often it will change ‘get’ to ‘hit’ causing weird misunderstanding!

Sure he wasn't going for a local massage....hehe :)

Nothing like that in the area! For that one has to go to Sukhumvit area!
