A Mom's Dummy Guide to a Boy's Haircut and Saving 💲💲💲

in #partiko5 years ago (edited)

Goodbye, long hair. Goodbye Dhs25.

Said my cousin on one of his social media posts. He just spent Dhs 25 ($6) on a haircut! In times when each centavo counts to make ends meet, this amount, accumulated over time, can be substantial.

Oh well, having 2 boys I certainly can relate. Only, for young boys it is Dhs 40 ($10) for a professional haircut. And that means $20 for me each month.

Mommy's BFF to the Rescue

Having 2 boys, I have developed a close "friendship" with my husband's clipper. It has helped me save a lot on my boys' hair.

Each month or two, I pull out these clippers to give my boys a haircut.

So here let me give you a dummy guide to cutting your boy's hair without going to the kid's salon.

First, the "cape".

To save a lot of work from cleaning up, I normally cut their hair inside the bathroom. Lay some newspaper or plastic to catch the hair, and then proceed to business.

This time around, I tried making a "cape" (I honestly don't know what it's called).

Here, let Little Monster model it for you. 😊

Materials needed:

  • 1 large garbage bag
  • scissors

Procedure:

  1. Fold the bag in half, lengthwise. Cut a semi-circle along the bottom (closed) part of the garbage bag. This will be the "neck-part" of the cape.
  2. Cut arm-holes at each side of the bag.
  3. Ask your little one to model it for you in front of the camera. (lol, you can definitely skip this part)

The Haircut

Kuya's hair is thick (like mine) and I always hurt him when the clipper somehow snags his hair.

At the side of the clipper, you will find numbers. This indicates the length at which the device will trim the hair. The smaller the number, the shorter the hair will be.

For me, I set the clipper at 15mm first. In a scooping motion, glide the clipper from the nape up to the middle part of the back of the head. Do this around the head up to the sides just above the ears.

Set the guide comb to a lower number (I do 9mm) for the final length. Glide the clipper around until you get an even cut.

Clip the Ears

Nooo! Only the hair hanging just by the ears.

Most probably, after trimming the hair at sides you will still be lying by the ears. Remove the clipper's guide comb (the one with numbers) so you are left with the shaver head.

You can ask your son to hold down his ears for you while you trim each side.

Scissors

Now, for the tricky part. The top of the head.

I used to just use different lengths through the clipper's guide comb to finish the task. This time though, I tried cutting the top part with scissors.

Now, I am not the expert, but here's what I have done.

Damp the hair using a spray bottle. Pull segments of the hair and position the fingers at the desired length. Cut in strokes parallel to the head. Do so until they are of uniform length.

Ta-da!

And here are my boys just after mommy's experiment. 😅

They are still at the age where they would let me control everything in their lives, their hairs included. So why not take advantage of that, eh?

And besides, there is still much time to learn new haircut tricks here and there so they may never want to go to salons even when they're already grown up men. 😉

Until then, I guess mommy will do the job.
