New Mexico Outdoors- Things to do near Socorro Pt 1

in #outdoors6 years ago

Want to feel like you’ve been transported to the setting of a sci-fi movie? Then head just west of Socorro, New Mexico to the Very Large Array. The VLA is a radio astronomy observatory which consists of 27 radio antennas. They offer walking tours and open houses where you can learn about the role of the VLA and other telescopes in astronomy research. Be aware that you will need to shut off your phones while at the VLA. Though you are allowed to turn it on for short periods to take pictures, if you have a digital camera, I would recommend bringing one. When you turn your phone on just make sure you're in Airplane mode. No wi-fi or bluetooth on! Also, double check that they are open to the public the day you are going out. You wouldn't want to get all the way out there and find out they were closed!

Another highly recommended place to visit nearby is the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge just south of Socorro. It is a very beautiful area, which is home to a large variety of birds, notably cranes and geese. It is a favorite place of the sandhill crane during migratory season, and the wildlife refuge hosts a festival in mid-November to celebrate the beauty of this spectacular bird. The wetlands of Bosque Del Apache offer stunning views of both sunrise and sunset, when you are most sure to see the variety of birds that call the refuge home. For food, there are a few highly recommended places in nearby San Antonio .Stop by the original Owl Cafe or the Buckhorn across the street for an authentic green chile burger or go to Don Juan’s for some “classic” New Mexican food.

Just North of Socorro is San Lorenzo Canyon, in the Sevilleta Wildlife Preserve. San Lorenzo canyon offers ample opportunities for hiking, camping and photography. If you’re going to here, make sure your vehicle has enough clearance to make it through the sand (AWD/4WD is a definite bonus). If you want to explore the desert east of Socorro, the Quebradas backcountry trail is beautiful. Be sure to check the weather before doing either of these, because flash floods can be of concern.
