From History: Today's Famous Birthdays - 18/Mar/2018

Hi Steemians,

I couldn't work on my daily posts for last 4 days as I got to be busy on some work.
This is an effort to provide some information on Five selected famous personalities born on this day.

1. Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens famously known by her stage name as Queen Latifah is an American singer, songwriter, actress and producer who has sold over 2 millions records world-wide and is a winner of a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award along with a nomination to Academy Awards.

She has released a total of 5 albums and has concentrated more on acting on television and films after 2004 although she continues to work on music.

Some of her best known movies are Bringing Down the House, Taxi, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, Beauty Shop, Last Holiday, Hairspray, Joyful Noise, 22 Jump Street and the more recent one being Girls Trip released in 2017.

She has a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame.

2. Rudolf Diesel

Rudolf Diesel was a German inventor and mechanical engineer who was the inventor of diesel engine.

He was a meritorious student during his school days and received a scholarship from Royal Bavarian Polytechnic of Munich to complete his engineering.

During his engineering, Diesel studied Thermodynamics and about constraints on fuel efficiency in both theoretical and practical ways which helped him to design the steam engine.

He was the holder of patents from Germany, US and other countries on his diesel engine design.

3. F. W. de Klerk

F. W. de Klerk is a South African politician who served as State President of South Africa from 1989 to 1994.

He is instrumental in dismantling the apartheid system and freeing imprisoned Nelson Mandela.

He later worked as deputy president under Nelson Mandela from 1994 to 1996.

He was also the last head of the state of South Africa from white minority rule.

He is the person who dismantled South Africa's nuclear weapons program.

He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 along with Nelson Mandela for their effort in dismantling the apartheid.

4. Bonnie Blair

Bonnie Blair is a retired American speed skater and is considered as one of the top skaters of her era.

She competed for United States in 4 Olympics winning 5 golds and a bronze medal, making her one of the most decorated athletes in Olympic history.

She has also won 3 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals in world championships.

She was named by Sports Illustrated in 1994 as their Sportswoman of the year.

She is an inducted into United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004.

5. Randal Cremer

Randal Cremer was an English liberal member of parliament and a leading advocate for International arbitration and was part of International Arbitration Movement( arbitration between companies or individuals in different states, usually by including a provision for future disputes in a contract).

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1903 for his efforts on international arbitration.

He was knighted in 1907 and also won French Legion d'honneur.

I do like Queen Latifah's movies. The movie Last Holiday was originally to star John Candy. He had passed away so they had a new version starring her.
