Living in Luxury Off the Grid - How the Tingle of Camo Ignites the Soul!

in #offthegrid7 years ago

After 2 years and a lot of really fun test-driving we found an ex-Vietnam era combat carrier that could hold 2 bags of sand (for concrete), a pallet of cement, a load of lumber and plywood, 50 PVC drainage pipes, and then cross a river carrying it.

It takes the whole year every year to get the permit to cross the river and it is only good for 2 weeks at the end of September.

"Handsome" (aka: Doug, Dearest Hubby), Vasily (Doug’s coworker and friend), and Vincent (@vcelier) get ready for the first crossing of the year

First there’s grooming a ramp down into the river so we don’t erode the bank…

Crossing the river

And then there’s the additional thrill of driving around the property when we have guests!

Several years ago my sister was organizing an auction for her kids school. A family bought a visit to our house that included one of our river crossings in the cargo carrie. They all (parents and two ‘tween boys) showed up in camo and we had a great afternoon with an informal tea afterwards.

P.S. Who would have guessed that insurance has no option for insuring an ex-combat vehicle?

only being able to cross for two weeks during September must mean you guys are super dedicated! did you get the vehicle just to carry supplies across the river?

It's important to carry all the big stuff back and forth as efficiently as possible during the 2 weeks. The pics don't really show it but the ford that we need to cross is about 1500 - 2000 yards and the whole area is nothing but large rocks and boulders. The rocks don't get caught in the tracks the way they do with regular wheels so technically we got it only for the crossing but it doesn't stop Doug with having too much fun driving it.
