Pidato Piala Gabenor provides platform to encourage the use of Bahasa Kebangsaan in the financial sector

Mohd Arfaizal Muhammad Arsatfrom Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad was named champion of the 11th Pertandingan Pidato antara Institusi Kewangan Piala Gabenor 2019 with the topic Penggunaan Bahasa Kebangsaan dalam Industri Kewangan Masih Belum Meluas: Cabaran dan Kekangannya. Meanwhile Mohd Afifi bin Zahari from Zurich Life Insurance Malaysia Berhad and Panglima Jagumba J Padasian from Citibank came in second and third place respectively. A total of 13 participants made it to the final round of the competition.

The winners of Pertandingan Pidato Piala Gabenor were awarded RM5,000 (Champion), RM3,000 (first runner up) and RM2,000 (second runner up) cash prizes respectively. They also received a trophy, a specially produced copper medallion1, certificates of participation and books published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

This year, 22 financial institutions including six foreign financial institutions took part in the competition. It is encouraging to note that out 79 participants, nine were non-bumiputera. In addition, participation was also extended to employees of the Association of Banks Malaysia and the Association of Islamic Banks Malaysia this year.

The topics identified for the competition are current issues affecting the financial sector including the trade war between the United States of America and PR China and its effects on regional economies (Perang Dagang Amerika Syarikat-Republik Rakyat China: Kesannya Terhadap Ekonomi Serantau), Fintech and its effects on the community (Kesan Fintech Terhadap Masyarakat) and on environmental sustainability (Alam Sekitar Lestari, Sejahtera Ekonomi). The participants were able to share their views on these current financial issues in Bahasa Kebangsaan.

Pertandingan Pidato Piala Gabenor encourages financial sector employees to express their ideas and opinions on topics that are meaningful to financial consumers. Since its inception, the Bank has reached out to approximately 650 participants from over 30 financial institutions.

About Pertandingan Pidato antara Institusi Kewangan Piala Gabenor

Pertandingan Pidato antara Institusi Kewangan Piala Gabenor, established in 2009, is co-organised between Bank Negara Malaysia and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. It aims to promote and encourage the use of Bahasa Kebangsaan in the financial sector as well as increase public understanding of the Bank’s policies and initiatives through topics that are relevant to the financial sector.

1Bank Negara Malaysia issued a special copper medallion with the new logo for Pertandingan Pidato Piala Gabenor. The medallion, specially minted by Kilang Wang of Bank Negara Malaysia, bears the logo on the obverse and a unique "Songket" pattern on the reverse.
