[CR] 🎨 "Journey II" - mixed media on glass
After working on all these digital files I've been showing here lately, I thought it was time to come back to something traditional. As many of you might know already, my core specialty is my work on glass.
What makes this different is, that I always start with a pencil drawing on the reverse side, the one, that will actually be the back side of the later glass painting, as explained here.
Its a long and tedious process, to get to the finished piece. After a thin layer of watercolor for the mood of the piece, I add the colors for the details in oil. Sometimes backed by a final layer of egg tempera.
The tricky thing is, that one is actually working in the opposite direction one would do in a "normal" painting. Start with the highlights and than working down to the background. That involves a lot of thought and planing and once you get to a certain point, its almost impossible to correct anything. No wonder I find digital so relaxing ;-)
Here the final "Journey II"... I'm working on a digital version with all the elements animated. Might take a while.

The whimsical aspect is very important to me, and I guess, its just my nature. Haha... the issue of someone watch me work has come up before. You would most likely fall asleep!

I think it was in a conversation with the incredible ARINA, where this subject came up. She told me, that someone wanted to come to her studio, to see her work.
Thing is, people seem to have an expectation, that is quite a bit different from reality. Artists like us work veeeeeeeery slow, you hardly see any progress. It would be like watching your beautiful roses grow. The result is one thing, but the process....

Thank you very much for your kind words. For me, my traditional and my digital work go hand in hand now and one inspires the other. I like how I can redefine older pieces and how the digital work sparks new ideas for my traditional work.

Love, how not to compliment you? When you dedicate so much love and dedication to realize an incredible work of art. The compositions he makes in all your designs are impressive.

When painting a normal canvas, such as a watercolor, I first make the light tones. When painting over the brightest areas, where the light is represented, I later apply the increasingly dark colours and can decide where to use less and where to use several layers. The more layers, the darker (which of course you know). I don't quite understand that with your technique yet. Does it mean that you do it the other way round? ... I would like to see the course of your work, because it is difficult to imagine.
The really good watercolor artists, I noticed, paint from the negative into the positive. Those who paint the outer lines (i.e. already prefabricated lines) of objects from the inside to the outside don't really seem particularly talented. It's more those who fill the space around an object and gradually give it shape that I find fascinating. Of course, that's also a matter of taste. In the field of watercolour artists, I like those who don't present any concrete or even photorealistic works best. But when you look at their pictures, the illusion of realism is so perfect that I'm amazed at the human brain. If you then go very close to the picture, there is nothing else to be seen there but different light and dark tones, but not a single visible clear object.

I'm not really a watercolor artist, like master @shibasaki or the wonderful @jungwatercolor. I use the substance, not necessarily the method. I used to work on glass a lot more with watercolor earlier in my career, but now I use it in only a few very thin layers for the "mood" of the piece and to add a bit more grip for the oil colors I put on top... depending on the point of view.
I don't know, if you ever looked at this post about how I do it but Hinterglas painting has a tradition of its own. I just added a twist by using pencil instead of a paint that naturally sticks to glass.
Of course, with art its often a matter of taste, as with many other things. The one likes to eat Leberkäse and someone else likes to ride their bicycle, like my grandmother used to say 🍔🚵♂️
