Life Choices and New Beginnings

Hello friends!

This video is an update on the large life decision I had to make recently and an introduction of a new video podcast series I'm starting called SpeakFreelyTV.

happy you are enjoying some SPACE after that chaos!! looks like you're in a beautiful place. excited for your podcast :) where will you host it? happy travels, wizard friend ;)

I'm discovering how little space I had in my life before. I don't know how I lived that way for so long.

Glad you're looking forward to the podcast! I'll be hosting the show from wherever I happen to be. All I need is a mobile phone connection.

How are your finances holding out? I'm kind of at a crossroads too. I saved up a bunch of money years ago from a corporate job and lived off it for a while but life events and not successfully finding my own stable independent income means I'm basically back to square one, getting down to my last dollar. I can keep bouncing between temp jobs but I'll never get too far ahead. At the same time I really don't want to get back into the corporate bullshit.

I can last probably the rest of the year without doing any work at all. I'm trying to position myself to be able to live without dollars, unless it's cash. I'm getting into barter and work trade with people in the towns around here.

I don't think I could ever go back to the corporate world... I'd live out of dumpsters before I do that again... unless it's for a cause I really believe in!

You can make a lot of money on Utopian writing bugs. Several hundred a day if you're smart about it.

Utopian would be cool, just haven't hit a groove with it yet to make it worthwhile. You still doing Utopian stuff? It's down now too, guess it was hacked the other day.

I've taken a break from Utopian... too much like working back in the corporate world. It's like I'm allergic to anything even remotely like that! It's good to know it's there to fall back on if I need it though.

Ya, sounds like they got hacked... hopefully it doesn't hurt their reputation too badly. I know some of the folks running it all, and they're definitely good at what they do and well-intentioned.

Haha, too much like work. I get that feeling too, but if I was actually making enough money to live off it I'd be happy to do it. So far bullshit temp jobs have been more lucrative for me, as sad as that is.

What kinds of temp jobs are you finding?

I applied to a few engineering ones down near Seattle but never heard anything back. Looks like it will be some sub $15/hr menial labor type job.

Might be worth checking out some of the contracting agencies in the area. A lot of the companies in the area hire through there. Volt is one. Probably could make quite a bit depending on your experience.

I agree with you completely. I worked in IT for 3-4 years after graduating and I felt exactly how you say.

Ended up taking some online classes in journalism and going nomadic.

It was amazing and I don't regret it. I went back to IT for a few reasons.

  • I was completely broke
  • I wanted to impress a girl (money)
  • I actually do like programming (but the lifestyle can make me hate it)

I'm starting to feel more like I did previously when I went nomadic. I'm hoping to find a balance. I don't want to leave IT again because I realize money can give me the day to day freedom that I want.

I'd love to drop in on your show, I'm not a great speaker and pretty shy but I'm trying to get passed that.

Despite at the moment feeling totally shutoff to the idea, I can see how I could find myself back in there for the same reasons you gave... but only if the work was benefiting rather than hurting the world. My career in video games wasn't helping anything as far as I can tell.

What are you doing to find balance? That might be a good topic for the show!

Well tbh my life now is completely unbalanced. I'm living AirBnb to Airbnb, fighting a charge against me, and working 60-80 hours a week.

The thing is only 40 hours are for my day job at an IoT company, (we have partnerships with traditional companies for example a heating company, to make their products z-wave compatible).

My real goal is to become independent by having enough money that I can pursue my own goals without having to consider money. I've made some money on Steem, Utopian.io, and also a little bit (not much) from general crypto trading.

I live by the non-aggression principle but I'm not necessarily out to help or change the world. Just a wanderer trying to escape the system.
