Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook, which he left in 2007, sees Mark Zuckerberg's "uncontrolled power" as a problem and believes that radical action is needed.

The promises of Facebook and its CEO for greater privacy, promises already made several times in the past, have obviously not convinced. For a former close friend of Mark Zuckerberg, a solution is needed today.

Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes believes that the social network boss has too much power and that the Internet advertising giant has become a monopoly. And this situation requires corrections, which the firm cannot take alone.

Mark Zuckerberg has too much power

On May 9th Thursday, Hughes called for the Facebook’s dismantling in an editorial published in the New York Times. One of the current problems’ causes according to him is the lack of internal opposition to Zuckerberg.

It is therefore incumbent on the government to hold it accountable and limit its "uncontrolled power". In addition to supervising Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, Zuckerberg controls 60% of the voting shares on Facebook's board of directors, said Hughes.

" We are a nation with a tradition of reining in monopolies, no matter how well intentioned the leaders of these companies may be. Mark’s power is unprecedented and un-American," says the co-founder in his editorial.

In an email statement, Nick Clegg, Facebook's vice president of global affairs and communications, admits that the company's success comes with duties and accountability.

"It is not by calling for the dissolution of a successful American company that accountability is enforced," he opposes. "The responsibility of technology companies can only be achieved through the careful introduction of new rules for the Internet. That's exactly what Mark Zuckerberg asked for."

Until now, however, regulation has reportedly failed to regulate Facebook's practices. Hughes believes that the Federal Trade Commission made a mistake by allowing Facebook to acquire Instagram and WhatsApp. An intervention should not be postponed, he insists.

Separate Facebook from WhatsApp and Instagram

" Until recently, WhatsApp and Instagram were administered as independent platforms inside the parent company, so that should make the process easier," Hughes points out. " But time is of the essence: Facebook is working quickly to integrate the three, which would make it harder for the F.T.C. to split them up."

At the risk of compromising the profitability of a global giant? Not in Chris Hughes’ opinion, for whom even dismantled, Facebook will still be profitable. However, even such a radical measure would not be enough.

The co-founder advocates the creation of a new agency to ensure that technology companies protect privacy and the guidelines development for acceptable expression on social networks.

Hughes adds that even if a dismantling fails, insisting that such a measure be taken against Facebook would at least allow for greater monitoring.

"I take responsibility for not sounding the alarm earlier," he concedes again.

I’ve been hearing more and more about this but i don’t understand what dismantling would mean what’s the actual course of action they are proposing
