in #news7 years ago

More than 1.5 million volunteers spent the day planting trees in an attempt to stop global warming.

The Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in central India has organized an environmental initiative and has managed to gather 1.5 million people to plant trees. On July 2, more than 20 different tree species were planted on the banks of the Narmada River for 12 hours. This campaign was monitored by observers from the Guinness World of Records, which is expected to confirm a new world record.

The environmental initiative follows the 50 million trees planted last year in one day in Uttar Pradesh state and are part of the country's commitment under the Paris agreement to increase its forests by 95 million hectares by 2030.

"By planting trees we are not only serving Madhya Pradesh but the world at large", said Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the state’s chief minister.

"The protection of the environment and the mother planet is an article of faith", said Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India is the world’s third largest generator of carbon emissions.

Outstanding! Resteeming. As California heats up, we lose more and more acres of woodlands to fire. Your article reminds me to volunteer for tree planting days. It is a wonderful example for the entire world to follow, Let us all plant a new tree this month!
