Facebook Is Fighting Fake News!
According to Business Insider, Facebook has begun rolling out its much-anticipated solution to fake news.
I can already hear it now. The tinfoil-hat-wearing types will be yelling "Censorship!!!" from the rooftops (or maybe their parents' basements). But here's the thing... It's not censorship (as of yet). It'll be marked as disputed with a link to the fact checking site which disputes the article.
I often link out to articles on fact checking sites like Snopes because the content they provide is reasonable, verifiable, and often quite clear and undisputed. I've asked many to show me articles which are false, biased, untrue, etc and have yet to see a good example. Many often reply with something along the lines of "LOL! You still trust Snopes!?!?" but they never actually engage with the arguments made there.
What I didn't know until just now is that fact-checking websites actually have a code of principles! There's even an International Fact-Checking Network. Here's a quick summary of the principles:
- A commitment to nonpartisanship and fairness
- A commitment to transparency of sources
- A commitment to transparency of funding & organization
- A commitment to transparency of methodology
- A commitment to open and honest corrections
That sounds pretty great to me! For those interested in truth and not just confirmation bias, how is this a bad thing?
Could these organizations manipulate perspectives using falsehood? Maybe, but there are already 43 organizations that have been vetted. If any of those groups don't stick to the process, the other groups (or those completely outside of this list) will gain credibility by exposing them. This sounds like the beginning of a reputation system to encourage truth and transparency in journalism. I really like that, and I think we need more of it.
Previous generations relied on gatekeepers to feed them truth through their newspapers and televisions. Today, we consume media directly. It's up to us to improve our epistemology and find the truth among the alternative facts.

Sorry I didn't get back to you on snopes. Who would think to bookmark a snopes article you found to be wrong. You just mentally note, snopes: -1.
Snopes is about -15 from my personal experiences.
But, then you try to go reconstruct, where was the articles I was reading that pointed to snopes, and the other article I was reading that disproved it.
Asking for a list of years of casual running into snopes problems is a bit on the impossible side. But, I will remember you when I run into the next one.
So, one of the most truthful, tell it like it is, futuristic thinkers is on the "fake news" list. When doing a microsloth search, even with the website in the search, it doesn't come up until the 3rd page. When doing a very specific search on Boogle with the website in the search, the article is down in the middle of the page.
On facebook, I literally have to go to many of my friend's walls to see their posts.
And many posts have just disappeared, and its getting worse.
I bet you would like me to link to some of these.. but it is kinda impossible to link to something that has disappeared.
What F-c-book says sounds nice, but what it really means is that if you disagree with the MSmockingbirdMedia then you will get censored.

How do you define censorship? If I created a platform and allowed others to use it, but control what can and can not be said on that platform, is that censorship? Some may say yes. I think no. I think real censorship is where people forcibly prevent you from sharing ideas. Meaning, there are topics which people are simply not allowed to discuss without facing severe, often violent consequences. Thankfully, we don't have much of that in this country and with the blockchain it's virtually impossible (though various blockchain readers such as steemit.com can choose to do what they please).
And yes, I'm not a fan of the "fake news" list. I think that's separate from what's being discussed here which is specific examples of sites posting things which other sites which have agreed to a set of standards say is disputed. I don't see that as censorship. I see that as helpful. Sort of a, "Hey, before you take this as the whole story, check out these alternative perspectives on the issue." I see that as how we gain more accurate knowledge of reality.

I have taken a different approach in this aspect especially after I watched the movie "Spotlight". The investigative journalist knew the truth, but they waited long time to hit big, once and for all, after they provided facts. Nothing but love. Really. I hate to do what i did here...but you need to wake up...or AT LEAST stop attacking the people who actually care enough yo research factual evidence. The problem comes in when they try to become the arbitors of truth by creating a club of "fact checking" outlets who represent them and are able to flag content that are not expressly... illegal (i.e. child porn, assault, murder...etc.).
Flagging is "censorship lite" which is why I dont believe in it except in very fringe cases. Imho...its much better to limit number of posts per unique account and allow people to block users they dont like and easily see/block the accounts their trusted friends block.
