Senate Candidate Raising Money To Buy Guns For the Homeless So They Can Defend Themselves

in #news6 years ago

A candidate for Senate from Michigan named Brian Ellison is raising money to buy pump style shotguns for the homeless. Ellison says that homeless people have the right to defend themselves just like the rest of us do, and they are victims of violence more often than the average person as well.

“Not only are the homeless constantly under threat from would-be criminals, but they are also under threat from governments at various levels that criminalize activities that homeless people rely on for survival,” Ellison said.

According to a report published by Springer Publishing Company, LLC entitled Violence and Victims, Volume 29, Number 1, 2014, “Individuals who are homeless have an increased risk of experiencing myriad social problems including victimization and violence. The prevalence of violent victimization in the homeless population has been estimated to range from 14% to 21% and approximately one-third report having witnessed a physical attack on another person who was homeless. This rate of violence is highly disparate when compared to the general population in which only 2% report experiencing a violent crime.”

When Michigan Radio asked Ellison if he trusted the homeless people with guns, he pointed out that it is not fair to judge them like that and put restrictions on them.

“I don’t know why the homeless are viewed as such a different type of people as the rest of us. I carry a gun with me all the time, and I don’t victimize anyone. I wouldn’t expect that the homeless would use their weapons to fight off the police who are asking them to leave. I think the homeless would use their weapons to protect themselves from being victims of violent crimes,” he said.

Ellison told The Guardian that the individuals recieving the guns would be interviewed and it would be determined that they were qualified and had proper training.

Ellison is calling his campaign, “Arm the Homeless,” and the topic is obviously beginning to cause a stir in the media. He is not running as a Democrat or Republican but is instead running as a Libertarian.

On a fundraising page, Ellison pointed out that police have no duty to protect us and referred to the recent shooting in Parkland where cops hid during the most intense moments of the shooting.

“How long can we as a society sit back and allow peaceful citizens of this great country to be targeted for those that view them as weak targets? According to case law in the decision of Warren v. District of Columbia, the police do not owe a specific duty to provide police services to citizens. What this means is that as individuals we can not count on the police to protect us, as they are under no obligation to do so. We saw this recently in the Parkland shooting when Broward County Sheriff Deputies stood outside while a gunman killed 17 students and teachers. I believe it is time we take a stand against the injustice and victimization of the homeless,” the fundraising page said.

Ellison announced his campaign just as students across the country are taking advantage of a free day off school to protest for stricter gun control. When asked what he thought of the protests, Ellison said, “I’d say those kids have been watching too much mainstream media, because I don’t think they understand the reality of the situation.”

Wouldn't it be a better use of money to invest in affordable housing for the homeless? Doing something about providing them with homes is the most common-sense solution to their stability and safety.

I can't take this seriously, seems like something in a farce paper like the onion. Maybe I'm just used to the performance art of vermin supreme

Please keep them coming, you have a good eye for these kind of articles and I'm a fan my good man!

the only problem I see is that mostly people are homeless because they have serious substance abuse or mental health issues. If they can find some that don't then more power to him.

I don't know which I think is a bigger disaster, arming teachers or arming the homeless... If I had to choose one, I'd guess I'd have to say the homeless. Damn, this is such a bad idea on so many levels.

haha as the guy said below, I think this a vermin supreme level troll lol.

Thank god Rutger Hauer is still in work :D .. great digging as always John Vibes, for once I'm at a loss or words lol

Well, if anyone needs a gun for PROTECTION- one could argue- it would be a homeless person- how many homeless women are subject to rape?

How many homeless people have been victims of the Modern day sport of Young Punks bashing them in the face for laughs & posting a video of it on their youtube channles... Granted many homeless have mental issues- and just how many homeless- simply had a few too many of Life's Emergencies & too little of a support network.... how many Homeless- were working minimum wage jobs & can't afford jacked up rents?... Thinks about yourself- seriously- have you ever had close with being homeless- what would happen if you missed the rent payment next month- they say most Americans don't Even have $500 stashed away for an Emergency- it certainly does raise many questions.... Would an Army of Homless Americans be any better or worse than the New American Police Force- Of MUSLIM IMMIGRANTS from SOmali- yes- check out Minnesota & see how Many police from Immigrants from Somali- they've hired... & the un-armed woman in her pajamas that the Muslim SOMALI police in Minnesota Killed.... Not saying I think we should be passing out guns to the homeless- but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss this ideal either.

Interesting topic.
I never think about homeless people in that way because who want to attack them? Isn't that a little bit crazy... 50% of them are unstable people
That candidate Brian could raise money for shelters or homes for homeless people not for guns

Ellison told The Guardian that the individuals recieving the guns would be interviewed and it would be determined that they were qualified and had proper training.

I have no words for the contradiction in this statement.

I understand the need for protection, however, I can also see the need to seel more arms and bullets.

I understand the state of vulnerability, however, I can also see the risk of violence escalating in poorer districts.

I understand the to respond to such events, however, I can also see the problem it will perpetuate.

Guns are not a problem, but people with unstable emotions are.

The government and banks poke until desperation snaps the man/woman. And by having guns at hand, makes it all the more easier to vent out ones sorrow.

I feel that violence is a direct reflection of a hurt human being who hasn't learned how to express him/her self in an effective way.

Violence results when people trick themselves into believing that their pain derives from other people and that consequently those people deserve to be punished.
Marshall Rosenberg

Did he say anything about the fact Pontiac is 2/3 vacant lots and homeless could be housed if not for greedy banksters.

It’s hard to take this post seriously.

It’s not the writer, it’s just such an ... odd, topic.

I think the politician is trolling, but to make a point and raise a discussion about homelessness and gun rights, in a way that wouldcause both the left and the right to think outside of their usual boxes

I just read vice’s interview with him.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/ne9jyb/the-senate-candidate-who-wants-to-arm-the-homeless-explains-himself

I think he’s trolling too. But it’s kind of like being sarcastic online. It’s hard to tell.

Great post, thanks for sharing.
