The problem with large media sites is that all of them are black boxes, no matter how transparent they claim to be. If the outrage over a case of censorship is small enough, they ignore it. If it's big enough, they say it was an error of a overzealous flagger or a new algorithm they were testing (so they step back and try a different approach).

Alternative infrastructures where stuff like this isn't possible are the only way to prevent a 1984-style future.
