7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chile

in #news8 years ago

Just this weekend, Chile was struck by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in its southern region. The earthquake prompted thousands of people to evacuate the areas along the coast, and so far no major damage or fatalities have been reported. The nations' National Emergency Office has already lifted the evacuation order and a tsunami watch for the area.

It's estimated that at least 5,000 people had to leave their homes.

Aside from those who had to leave their home, because of the warnings over a possible tsunami, it's also estimated that another 20,000+ are without electricity at the moment and power crews are working to remedy that issue for them.

According to data from the USGS, the quake had a shallow depth of roughly 34.6km.

And this isn't anything new for the region, as Chile quite frequently gets struck by earthquakes. One of the largest ever recorded in the country was a 9.5/8.3 that took place back in the 60's in Valdivia, Chile. And the last time that the country had a large quake before this recent 7.6, was back in 2015 after a 8.3 struck and a tsunami hit the coast. It's estimated that at least 15 people died as a result of that earthquake. Prior to that, another 8.8 struck in 2010 and at least 500 people consequently lost their lives.

Hey man! @gringalicious lives in the same town that I do and everyone here is good, the quake was just over 200km south of us. There was no damage here, but we did feel quite the quake in our region. Pretty crazy!
Up to this moment there has been no reported deaths. The tsunami watch was lifted long ago and electricity is already being restored to the affected areas, according to SAESA (electricity providers)!
Here are some interesting pics of the damage: http://www.emol.com/fotos/38520/#1563179/Así-retrataron-los-usuarios-de-redes-sociales-al-sismo-que-afectó-a-la-zona-austral-de-Chile

That's great..no deaths too.

Her place can see those mountains..and the news said it's in the Southern part??

Yes, the Andes mountains run all the way down the eastern border of Chile, from north to south - they actually begin in Venezuela.
