After the fall of longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya is chaotic. Residents are forced to sell their jewelry and dollars for survival.

On the market behind Libya's central bank in Tripoli, black-market traders, some of them armed, exchange US dollars and Libyan dinar. Traders buy food and other goods abroad at an official exchange rate and resell them in Libya in an unofficial, bringing them high profits. Others are getting rich by smuggling heavily subsidized fuel from the country.

Ordinary people have to sell their jewelry and dollars that they have hidden at home. The 40-year-old Fatima, from Saba, in the south of the country, said she had not received a salary for four months. She sold three gold pendants so that her sister could pay for the treatment of diabetes. "We are helpless, we can not do anything else," she said.

1.3 million people need humanitarian aid

Signs of increasing poverty are also begging on the streets of Tripoli and families that are waiting for food. The UN estimates that around 1.3 million people in Libya need humanitarian aid.

Their situation deteriorated further in the last two weeks, as the exchange rate for a dinar on the black market, which was already at record low, fell further, which increased inflation from 25% to 30%. The value of the Libyan dinar has fallen by more than 600% since the beginning of 2014.

Sadik Al Kabir, Governor of the Central Bank, warned of the "extremely poor economic and financial situation". Traders and economists say political uncertainty is a major reason why the currency is getting weaker.

Experts say that the only way to resolve the issue is the devaluation of the dinar.

This year, Libya has increased oil production to around one million barrels a day.
