Rick Falkvinge On The Current State of Bitcoin

in #news6 years ago (edited)

This week we welcome Rick Falkvinge to the show to talk about the current state of Bitcoin.

Rick Falkvinge is the founder of the first Pirate Party and a campaigner for next-generation civil liberties and sensible information policy. In particular, he stresses how the copyright industries work in collusion with Big Brother hawks to erode or eliminate the parts of Internet that guarantee our civil liberties. Rick recently dubbed himself “Bitcoin Cash CEO” and has been an outspoken thought-leader during the tumultuous Bitcoin schism of this last year.

This interview was really interesting, the BTC/BCH battle is something I haven't quite understood. One thing that concerns me however is that though I believe that a large scale wealth transfer has been a long time coming, it seems that the current state of most crypto currencies, especially Bitcoin, just transfers that wealth from one small group to another. The idea seems to be that the new elite will be better than the old elite but that leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Firstly because power has been known to corrupt. Secondly because as was mentioned, those who currently control large amounts of wealth can easily transfer that wealth to the new system and in some cases are, meaning that a big portion of the new elite will be the same old players. And thirdly, regardless of who is holding vast amounts of power, why should anyone have that power over others? The argument that early adopters should be rewarded is valid but does not come close to addressing the issue of wealth disparity. How can we empower people who aren't on the cutting edge of this technology or who don't have capital to invest?
