Robots Slowed Down The Company, But Not Elon's Confidence

in #news6 years ago

Despite sending Nasa's telescope into space through the SpaceX programs and dreaming of life on other planets Elon Musk seems to be well grounded in his projects and business, his electric car company making no exception.

After the Tesla share prices fell from $340 to $252 last month the CEO spent much more time at the factory as usual. Even over the night. That was a clear sign for his employees that he is up for something.

After relying too much on robots and way less on human intelligence Tesla was facing manufacturing delays in the production of their recent Model 3 that weren't expected. That made its CEO admit on twitter that he was wrong when he tried to replace the human work force with robots.

"Yes, excessive automation at Tesla was a mistake. To be precise, my mistake. Humans are underrated."
— Elon Musk April 13, 2018

Although the Tesla Model 3 is considered one of the most advanced car factories in the world the manufacturing time of the Model 3 is much longer than expected resulting in delivery delays of up to nine months.

“There shouldn’t be a question mark as to whether somebody’s gonna get their car, it’s just, yes, you’ll definitely get your car. It’s gonna be six to nine months longer than expected."
Elon Musk in an interview for CBS

After switching lanes in the production process of the Model 3 from counting less on robots and more on human intelligence Tesla is able to make 2000 cars a week trying to fulfill its orders. Unfortunately the slow manufacture process of the new Tesla model was not the only reason behind the price drop in its stock shares.

Tesla also had to deal with a recent car accident involving a Model X that was driving on autopilot mode and a recall of 100,000 Model S examples for investigations due to problems at steering. None of these seem to have affected Musk's confidence in his projects and his fine sense of humor.

The Economist used to be boring, but smart with a wicked dry wit. Now it’s just boring (sigh). Tesla will be profitable & cash flow+ in Q3 & Q4, so obv no need to raise money.
