Did you know you have been involved in thievery in one way or the other in your academic work?

Hello beautiful steemians today I bring to you my ACHIEVEMENT 3 . titled:WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

Meaning of plagiarism

The Merriam Webster dictionary defines the act of plagiarism as; “to steal and pass off ideas or words of another as one’s own”.
Therefore copying and pasting somebody’s work or taking part of somebody’s work and pasting without proper referencing and pretending it is your work is what we refer to as plagiarism

Plagiarism is very common in all works of arts ranging from written works,music,videos,and many other form of arts. Today plagiarism spreads like wild fire. It is very common to find someone boldly repeating somebody’s relics without permission or copy and paste somebody’s work without proper referencing. In fact people even duplicate people’s work and make huge sums of money from it without the author’s consent. What a lamentable situation!
However, this work will be focused mainly on written works. It is true different countries view plagiarism differently and dish out punishment to plagiarers differently as well use different methods in fighting plagiarism

Forms of plagiarism

Direct Plagiarism
Just like the name implies "direct plagiarism is the word-for-word transcription of a section of someone else’s work, without attribution and without quotation marks. The deliberate plagiarism of someone else's work is unethical, academically dishonest, and grounds for disciplinary actions, including expulsion" " ^Source

Self Plagiarism
"Another form of plagiarism is Self-plagiarism .It occurs when a student submits his or her own previous work, or mixes parts of previous works, without permission from all professors involved. For example, it would be unacceptable to incorporate part of a term paper you wrote in high school into a paper assigned in a college course. Self-plagiarism also applies to submitting the same piece of work for assignments in different classes without previous permission from both professors."

Mosaic Plagiarism

"Furthermore, mosaic Plagiarism occurs when a student borrows phrases from a source without using quotation marks, or finds synonyms for the author’s language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original. Sometimes called “patch writing,” this kind of paraphrasing, whether intentional or not, is academically dishonest and punishable – even if you footnote your source!"

Accidental Plagiarism
"Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution. (See example for mosaic plagiarism.) Students must learn how to cite their sources and to take careful and accurate notes when doing research. (See the Note-Taking section on the Avoiding Plagiarism page.) Lack of intent does not absolve the student of responsibility for plagiarism. Cases of accidental plagiarism are taken as seriously as any other plagiarism and are subject to the same range of consequences as other types of plagiarism."

Consequences of plagiarism

• Plagiarism leads to lost of respect and self confidence
• This unwanted act may discredits the author's work.
• Many authors lose huge sums of money to plagiarists.
• Legal sanctions may follow this malpractice for example a student may be sanctioned through suspension if caught with a plagiarized work.Researchers may even be banned from publishing if caught with any plagiarized work.
• "Steeemians" involve in plagiarism may be sanctioned through suspension and even the closure of one's account.
• In fact plagiarism makes one looks suspicious and may loose confidence and respect from other writters . (scholars /bloggers)....

Ways to cub plagiarism

• Use citations when ever u take work from an external source" ^Source

• Try as much as you can to use your own ideas,if your must borrow from another author ,then you paraphrase appropriately. However,providing a source is still very necessary because they are not your ideas.
• Make proper use of Quotations signs and include a source when you copy an author's work word to word." ^Source

• Proper source should also be indicated on diagrams and images which are not yours.
• "While conducting your research on a topic, some phrases or sentences might stick with you so well that you inadvertently include them in your writing without a citation. When in doubt, using an online plagiarism checking tool can help you catch these issues before submitting your work." ^Source

• Above all adequate referencing and acknowledgement should be done when you take material from different sources.This gives credit to whom it deserves.

Conclusion

Beautiful "Steeemians" I believe for us to become reputable bloggers who aim at sustaining this platform we must shy away from all forms of plagiarism. Did you know:-

• copying somebody's work is more difficult than writing yours?
• Copying somebody's work without proper credit to the author only make you proud and arrogant???
