Hi, Everyone. How has your day been so far? I hope it is going well. This is my #achievement3 post and I will be writing on "What is Plagiarism". I hope you enjoy reading it :).

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

Plagiarism is the use of another person's work (it could be someone else's project, idea, assignment, article, experiment, post e.t.c) and claiming it as your own without full or proper credit.
Another definition of Plagiarism according to wikipedia,
"Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work".

In general, the definition of Plagiarism may vary from person to person but every correct definition of Plagiarism, must in the end boil down to "presenting someone else's work/idea for your benefit without full acknowledgment".

FORMS/TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

  • Plagiarism could be direct, which means copying and using someone's work as it is without any modification or alteration (word-for-word) and not giving full credit.
  • Plagiarism could be in form of copying excerpts of different people's work and patching into your own work without giving proper credit to the sources where you got them from in an attempt to make your work unique.
  • Another form in which one can plagiarize is, copying from your own previous work that you have already turned in in the past. This type of plagiarism is called self-plagiarism.
  • Plagiarism could also be accidental, that is one can plagiarize without knowing he/she is has done so. This can happen when you have done a lot of research work for a particular task and unknowingly use some of the ideas exactly, thinking they are your own. Avoiding this form of plagiarism might be difficult but trying as much as possible to recheck your work with the researches you have done in mind to see if you have one way or the other plagiarized might help.

WAYS OF AVOIDING PLAGIARISM

Avoiding plagiarism must be a top priority, the following are ways in which it can be avoided:

  1. Keep track of the sources you consult in your research.
  2. Paraphrase or quote from your sources (and add your own ideas).
  3. Credit the original author in an in-text citation and reference list.
  4. Use a plagiarism checker before you submit.

CONCLUSION

Plagiarism is a punishable offense and I would advise that we make it our top priority to avoid it at all cost.
