The Question - - - Why Join Newbieresteemday?

The question was asked, I tried to answer in a short response, Didn't work. @davemccoy recommended I try to make the answer into a post. So here is my effort at an answer.

Why Join

In short why to join newbieresteemday? I think it is different for everyone. When I was a newbie, there was no group that helped redfish. Yes there is a lot of support for minnows. Minnow votes count, not a lot but they have a "Visible" value, whereas when you receive a vote from a redfish, a lot of times it has no "Visible" vote value. So why is this important, why all the help available for minnows but not for redfish? I saw it as because a redfish can not buy votes. By not being able to buy votes, they give nothing to the whales and the vote bots. So they are ignored and allowed to play among themselves, and every now and then get thrown a bone by a curie league, or a curation trail, or a whale, so that it can seem that they are valued by those whales that control those types of groups. Redfish, are nothing to the majority of the Dolphins and whales on steemit.

Newbieresteemday, was The First group/idea that was formed to actually help redfish. (I am or was a redfish, made into an artificial almost minnow). The group was formed by @mudcat36 and @davemccoy, both redfish at the time of forming the group.

I joined, even though I let @mudcat36 and @davemccoy know that I could not be a full 100% member the way they initially envisioned the program. Monday, (one day late), I made my week 13 post. So in 2 months newbieresteemday initiative has grown enormously. They did not promise anything to anyone that joined their initiative. I expected nothing from them. I joined because I remember what it was like to make a post and have nothing on it. No votes, no comments, no views. I made a lot of those invisible post. So I used the newbie initiative to help me find those almost quality post, so I could give them a vote, and a comment. What do I get out of it, in the beginning nothing. I expected nothing other than the self knowledge that I may have made someone happy just because they got a vote and a comment from me. Face it, redfish get 10-15 votes a day to use. If a redfish votes on a comment I made on their post I get nothing, no real reward and no real payout. I have hundreds of curation rewards of 0.001, they add up over time, and I have slowly powered up my SP with those votes. No one is going to reach 500SP and their own vote slider by voting only on redfish accounts.

Most of my SP comes from a very few accounts. I like to also read, and have a few authors that enjoy getting comments from their readers and they do generally give upvotes to the comments. After two months for a little while dave got up to where he could give a newbie nickel to the supporters of newbieresteemday and newbiegames participants. With the price of steem and income flow to those accounts he has had to be careful of the funds. I was able a few times, because of luck able to assist on funds, but it has been awhile, and I hope that changes again soon.

In conclusion

In short why to join newbieresteemday? - - - - To make a new user feel that, "yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause"

Part 2

I tried to make it short, I really did. But well, there isn't anything to really gain. So it is a thing people either choose to do or not. A personal thing. I will say that I have gotten a lot of followers, but really the number of followers one has is no real indication of success. I have, and this is the most important thing, met a lot of very nice people through it and the discord chat room.

Drop by the discord or just in one of @davemccoy, or @beeyou, post or comments and say you would like to join, you get put on a shout out list, other than that I don't think there is an "official" join thing. Just a loose group of associated like thinking people.

Now from @beeyou:

That would be me adding you and trying to maintain a members list @xxxxxxxxx. Or list of active members, those that are still out there trying to help others as part of the effort. In what ways fit them most, by hosting contests, writing weekly posts, resteems, cheerleading on behalf of the initiative, or simply greeting people on Discord. No strict guidelines here and no formal application. Dave used to tag me on everyone that said they want to join. After some time, I went through the list and removed everyone I didn't know. People say they want to help others, but another thing between words and actions.

Dave has his own list of members. I add people I see around. Here is the link to my last post on the initiative. It is some time inbetween, it's finding the time to write that is challenging. I keep saying I will come out with another one, but time, time, time..

So How Does It Work

Well we have our @newbieresteemday account. When I say hello to someone on the #introduceyourself tag that I find, (if I leave a comment it means I liked what I read), I will mention the whole account name and the #newbieresteemday tag. If in their introduction they indicate they like or enjoy games I will tag our sister account @newbiegames. One of the account moderators will see that they were tagged by me in a comment then they will go take a look. They look deeper than me sometimes, and if they find a post that is of sufficient quality they will resteem that post, likely vote and give a comment. Other followers of newbieresteemday will see that post come across their feed and they may go take a look at the post and also leave a comment or a vote or both.

I think the only person that saw or voted on my first post was @firepower. It has been a long while since I have seen him active on the introduceyourself tag. He got harrased a bit and I think he has just seen how much shit is on the trending and hot pages. It takes time now to find a new user on the introduceyourself tag. With the newbieresteem Initiative new user that are found now get a little bit of a boost, a leg up from a group that ask nothing of them in return, not a vote, not a comment, not a follow. We let the new user decide, we help where, when, and how ever we can.

I still remember that day that we put that out... And I didn't think you were going to like it at first.. Then I found out that we could work together really well as you are an amazing creator and know exactly you want to get done!

Its been a pleasure and I love to see you reflect on somethink that we can all be proud of... It is an amazing group of selfless people and I'm proud to be your (and everyone's) teammate!

    Awesome job @bashadow!

    @mudcat36 @lynncoyle1 @beeyou @amariespeaks @deliberator @themanwithnoname @plushzilla @jorlauski @royaleagle @charisma777 @sweetcha @wanderlass just thought you might want to see @bashadow's post and congratulate him on making it officially to a minnow :D

I had to kill the first one. Steemit now does not let you use less than 5 tags, if you have a tag in the body of your work and only four tags it will drop that tag into the tag line. So make sure you use all five even if you don't want to, or don't put tags in the body of your post.

I didn't know that ... You are always teaching me some cool things... I guess I must always use the 5 tags :P... I did know you can't change the first one. Learned that the hard way when I misspelled newbiegames (no s) :P

Congratulations on becoming a minnow! Soon a dolphin! And thank you for all that you do in this community. You're one of the most active and helpful in the newbieresteem group.

I also appreciate your support to my Minnow Fridays (which I haven't done in weeks as I've been busy) as well as the posts dropped at the discord channel. I can see your genuine kindness and helpfulness! Thank you!

I like helping people get a somewhat nice start. It doesn't always help, a lot still only make the one or two post, then they are gone. But others stay, and begin to enjoy themselves, support others and then get support back. I think steemit is a pretty unique experiment, and I am enjoying it, and hope it stays around.

I am sure your encouragement and support helps them. It will really depend on them if they give up too soon because it isn't really easy here for most. Aside from the external motivation that they can get (encouraging comments, upvotes, etc), they will need an inner drive as well. It is indeed an interesting social and psychological experience.

Just joined you people @newbieresteemday at discord as to go far need togetherness!

I truely believe success is empty when you reach there all alone!

welcome @sherbanu! Its nice to meet you and you can connect to me at davemccoy#2479 ... That is the easiest way to get to me if I can help you in any way. I'm glad to hear you found out about us, it is a good group of people and we try to help each other!

Nice to meet you to @davemccoy ! Yes truely discord channels are too if my favorites nowadays ! As people with same goals find the opportunities to share ideas. Gain help etc. So nice of all the people taking steps to build more stronger community . Looking for more initiatives and also taking clues how can be involved.
    Thanks again

Welcome sherbanu, we are a pretty friendly group. In chat or out, most don't mind questions, as we all have a lot to learn still. I learned doing this post not to leave a blank tag, if you have one in the body of your post it will auto fill in the tag line. I did not like that, but I did learn that today, so now if I want to only use 4 tags, I need to have a throw away tag for the fifth one. Another day, another lesson. Life still goes on.

Thank you @bashadow ! Yes its indeed bunch of people's helping each other as they share same mission. It's good to walk with people having same destinations.
Learning never ending a process. Lot more to learn lot more to earn indeed😉😉

Funny and good to see, that my simple question resulted in a great post!
We all, do rather quickly forget how it was during those dark days. Dark days you ask?
According to me the dark days, here on the steem platform, when you are giving everything you have but your posts don't get noticed!
It is great to see such an initiative who warmly welcomes the newcomers and guide them in their first moons on the steem blockchain! To teacht how things work around here and what it utmost important!
What is important to me, is the interaction! What would be a social media platform be, within interaction. Well, just nothing! That it would be just a gathering of webpages!
Steem is a big social expirement, according to me! It is strange how people start to act differently here, than on Reddit, Facebook, blogger and so on, once money is involved!
I never did see someone begging for an like on facebook, but I do see them here a lot.
I never had someone I didn't suddenly comment on a photo of me on any side, saying "great picture, thanks for sharing". (The reason behind this could also be age and beauty related :)).
So it is good to see some people swimming against the flow of bots, trying to educate people what the real value of the steem platform is.
It is good to see, that you all are trying to extend your friendships circles, we are too quickly satisfied with the one we have, missing out on a lot of opportunities to meet new friends!
So to end this lengthy reply in old school: kudos to all of you @davemccoy, @beeyou, @bashadow, @lynncole1, @mudcat36 and all the ones, who I am forgetting!
Thx for keeping out an eye to the community and to make logging in, feel like coming home. Bwa, not home, but like in the serie "cheers" (where everybody does know your name)!

Congratulations @bashadow ! How did you figure out you're a redfish? lol I hear people talk about minnows/red fish/plankton but I don't know where the line is?
Anyways, I loved the walk down memory lane ! Who knew the #newbieresteemday initiative would grow into this?? It's been an honor teaming up with you and everyone else, too.
Can't wait to see what this update will be like when we've been around for 6 months or a year ! :-D

I think I first learned about the fish levels back in November of 17, someone had a contest are you really what level you think you are, (put your fish level in the comments and see if you are right). So I had to find out, I didn't want to just guess. 80% of the people that guessed were wrong on that contest.

hmm I wonder what kind of fish I am lol I hope there is a mermaid level ;-)

I would guess, based on your SP, that you are still a redfish or a plankton as some prefer that term, I don't know why anyone would want to be plankton, but some prefer it. You become a minnow when you have one million vest, currently that is equal to about 491 SP, (totally based on the SP I had when I got my Million mark). Then at 10 million you become a dolphin. I have no clue how much SP that is going to be, but ten time I would guess close to 5000 SP to be a dolphin.

Maybe we should start our own names up for help levels, Mermaid for the ladies, Submariner for the guys.

ahh I see thank you - and I think that is an awesome idea! Mermaids and Submariner's to the rescue! lol ;-)

oh I'm reminded of the ancient Mariner poem - can we have an albatross level too?? hahah

First of all... HOORAY!!! You made it! I knew it was coming down the pipe, but now I can offer my official congratulations on reaching Minnow Status :)

And I love the walk down memory lane here; it's great to have everything compiled in a post like this too. Thank you for this and for everything else you selflessly do :)

A hard road, but well worth it. At least we make a few people happy, and introduce them to others that can help them. Then they help others and the cycle continues and grows.

Great. As a newbie I am glad I found you. I am working on my content, but for now I am commenting and learning. I have already, in the last few days followed some really great content creators and some where kind enough to respond to me and offer me words of wisdom. This is so important to get going on the right foot and try to avoid some of the mistakes that others have made, simply by them being willing to pay it forward.

You can ask most of us questions with out having to worry about adverse reactions from us. If when you start to get into the chat side we have people that will help edit post, critique post, and help with markdown/html language. We also have a person that takes on mentors to help them in a one on one learn how to succeed on steemit @goldendawne, she is a pretty successful individual that has helped a lot of people. So anytime you have a question and are having a hard time finding the answer one of us will likely be able to help or point you to someone who can.

Thank you for the mention! I'm always around... peeking somewhere, reading posts and just being me.

Honestly, I think the newbieresteemday was one of the best initiatives brought to the steemit platform. @davemccoy and @mudcat36 should be commended for this effort. And all the veteran steemians who have joined in to support this all deserve a gracious thank you. Whether offering advice (like me) offering up sbd/steem support; without all of those committed to this... well, you know where I'm going. The dedication that I have seen is awesome.

It has helped a lot of people I think. Steemit is not easy to understand at first, but after two weeks it is easier, so getting people past that 2 week shock period helps keep the interest going for them. A few votes, or nice comments does wonders for people.

Absolutely! Having more interaction and getting those comments/upvotes really can motivate people to stay and write that next post.

I love doing my weekly Dear Dawne post for members. I can remember how intimidating the platform can be and how easy it is to throw your hand up and say... I can't do this... no one is here. We're here... just keep writing. We'll find you

It has helped many and continues to help more, because the new members, in their gratitude, want to pay it forward. And I've noticed many other groups that have formed, like @asapers or @greetersguild for example, whose purpose is to help newcomers. I'm hoping @bashadow, that we 'catch' so many in the net, that the 'pay it forward' mentality will eventually become the norm. Because you're right @goldendawne, it's so easy to throw in the towel; it's a difficult platform to understand at first. I can still remember the feeling of dismay with it all. Thankfully Dave and I started at about the same time and stumbled upon each other just before he and mudcat started the whole thing. I'm so thankful for serendipity sometimes :)

So true! That's what it's all about...helping people and then them doing the same ;)

I'm sure you'll be a dolphin before we know it @bashadow!!!! You do an awesome job keeping up that's for sure!

I'm hoping the growth toward dolphin is opposite of the reputation growth rate and is ten times easier to get to than it was to make minnow status.

Congratulations, you have been resteemed because you used the #newbieresteemday tag and have a good post!

The tag-lifter looks for good #newbieresteemday posts to resteem to his 2500+ followers!

Hi @bashadow. Thanks for putting the information in a post. You did a great job explaining it in a comment. I’m happy to see it explained in a post for others to see and reference if they have questions. What’s great about our community are the individuals selflessly dedicating their time to help others in their unique way. I love that about #newbieresteemday. No official rules. Simply have the heart and intention of supporting newbies and each other.

Very well stated! I also saw your other post on making it to minnow status. Congratulations!!!

    Thank you, a long haul from back then. I calculated just over 6 years to dolphin status.;-}

6 years @bashadow? 😂. Have a little faith in your abilities bro.

That six years is if I reinvest almost every sbd, which I most likely will. Time will tell. Have to recalculate on my anniversary date of 8-1-2018.

I will be cheering you on the whole way, but let’s cut that time in half or three quarters, shall we? 😉

Yeah. If you have to do it for six years that means I will have to do it for longer. I can't even afford to reinvest all my sbd. I need to eat bro.

I believe you have the ability to do it in half that time @bashadow

Well the most obvious reason is Jan23com is there :)
    Just being silly. :)

We need silly sometimes, can't let it all be a pain in the arse after all. Oh wait it is, a pain in the arse, I think I sat to long.

hahaha... yes of course :) Agreed @jan23com!
