One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. night club on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. He was soon surrounded by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the topic of marriage arose.

One of the lovely ladies noted that when a gal gets married she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. Those terms could be applied to music too:

“Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

Something old

Something old this time is “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Recorded by the Brit rock band Queen, it was written by late frontman Freddie Mercury. It’s off their 1975 platter A Night at the Opera.

Something new

Our “something new” this time is from X.ARI. Here is her newly released performance video for her new song “Break-Point.” In a recent email, she spoke of the piece: “This song is about PTSD, the spiraling down that happens right before a breakdown, and the breakthrough that happens after.”
She added: “I'm releasing [it] in support of Bell Lets Talk, which raises money for mental health initiatives. Hot off her live performance of the song at Sayers Club in L.A., she stated will be “donating 10% of ticket proceeds to BLT.” She concluded: “I'll be releasing new music throughout the year.”

Something borrowed

Our “something borrowed” is a cover of The Knack’s 1979 hit “My Sharona.” It was written by band members Berton Averre and Doug Fieger. This version is played by Los Angeles-based performer Ali Handal. It’s off her 2010 disc Make Your Move.

Something blue

The “something blue” this time is “Memphis Blues” by W.C. Handy. Written by Handy, it was self-published in 1912. George A. Norton put lyrics to it and it was recorded in 1914. Subtitled “Mr. Crump,” it would go on to be recorded by many other artists as well.

Did we mention your favorite “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”? If not, let us know, Don’t forget to send us your sexy bride photos too!
