“The future is electric, and it is already here, right now"

in #new5 years ago (edited)

Norway is the first country where I saw Tesla after Tesla after Tesla driving on the bus lanes...because they're allowed to and, yes, the most beautiful country I've lived by now. This post however is not about beautiful fjords and Teslas, although I am a fan of both. It's about electric Taxis and Norway's solution to charge them fast and cheap so the business doesn't suffer and drivers are incentivised to buy electric cars.

Oslo, the capital of the small Nordic country, will implement by 2023 wireless charging stations for Taxis. All this will be possible thanks to Fortum, a Finnish company, in collaboration with US company Momentum Dynamics and in less than four years Norway will be even "cleaner" thanks to reducing its gas emissions by having more electric Taxis. If you were wondering how they're going to wireless charge the cars here you have the big picture thanks to Verge:

The project aims to install wireless charging using induction technology. Charging plates are installed in the ground where the taxi is parked and a receiver is installed in the taxi. This allows for charging up to 75 kilowatts. The project will be the first wireless fast-charging infrastructure for electric taxis anywhere in the world, and will also help the further development of wireless charging technology for all EV drivers.

Is there really a need for wireless chargers in Taxi stations? Yes, if you are Norway and care that much about environment. Normally Taxi drivers wouldn't be interested to buy electric cars and use them for their business because electric cars don't have a similar driving range to a diesel for example, and you have to drive to certain locations and charge the car and that costs time and money.

With the new found solution not only that Taxi drivers will be able to charge their electric vehicles in their own waiting stations wireless, while chatting with their colleagues, but will be able to do that fast and probably cheap, or even free. From my knowledge many charging stations are free around supermarkets and other public spaces in Norway but fast charge costs, however, the way I know Norwegians when it comes to motivating people those wireless charging stations will be free for cabs.

Another reason why there are relatively few electric taxis in Norway/Oslo compared to the number of electric cars ... one of the driving forces for electrifying the car fleet in Oslo is that electric cars get to use priority lanes and pay no road tolls (or pay great discounts on the tolls). That doesn't apply to taxis, they can always use the priority lanes and I don't think the road tolls are much significant for their bottom line (I don't even know if they have to pay it).

With such charging stations things will change and sooner than later there will be only electric cars as cabs. I don't see why not switch the lane towards electric. I would if I were a taxi driver. I guess there will be much more benefits than just charging a car wireless for the taxi drivers.
