New Netflix Ultra Tier Brings Higher Price with One Perk

in #netflix6 years ago

Netflix is a company that is continuously working on improving their services in some way. Improvements such as HD streaming, multiple screens, Ultra HD, etc are all available on various tiers the streaming service offers. They are testing out a new tier now called Ultra. The only problem is, besides a price increase for this tier, there is only one perk for subscribers.

The new Ultra tier will bring with it the usual four screens streaming, Ultra HD quality, and perks available in lower tiers.
The one new perk that Ultra subscribers can expect to enjoy is HDR – High Dynamic Range.

The question is, is the Ultra tier worth an additional $3 over the Premium tier to you?

This charging significant amounts for something that essentially costs the company very little to offer is a normal business model.

Just look back at the telephone companies when Caller ID began proliferating the world. It was an additional cost on your bill to get it.

Same for HD television service through most cable providers (either terrestrial or satellite). Same for DVR service – which many companies still charge extra for.

While I am not a fan of charging for things I perceive as little like HDR, I can see people wanting it if they just bought an HDR capable television. Why have the latest and greatest tech if you are not going to use it?

My concern though is, what content is out there that supports HDR right now? Won’t most of the content that is labeled as “HDR” be simply be upscaled content like how it was early in the HD days?

Just seems like a cash grab at this point. Or maybe a test to see if subscribers will go for the higher cost to test waters in raising rates on other plans.

Right now the Ultra tier is only showing up for Italy based subscribers. No word on if, or when, it will roll out to everyone else. If at all.
