The German Netflix show: Dark, the strangest thing I have ever seen

Hello steemians,

I am here to talk about the German series produced by Netflix called Dark. This show has the power to turn your brain upside down. It is probably the strangest series or even the “strangest thing” I have ever seen. Stranger Things is precisely the reason why I begin to watch this show. I was looking on the internet for similar series because I loved watching Stranger Things and I just Google it. And Dark was on the top of the list. But in my opinion, this series is very different from Stranger Things but I love the two. In stranger things, there are two different worlds at the same time and in Dark, it is the same place but there is a travel in the time between the past and the present.

General information

This series produced by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Fries is a mix between science fiction and thriller but don’t be afraid, it is not really frightened, you will not see any Demogorgon’s in this series ;). But it is true that there is just a lot of suspense and you have to think much more to understand than in Stranger Things because there are a lot of hidden or unknown facts that occur in the past and we are not aware of this at the beginning of the series. You also have to know that it is the first German-language Netflix original series and I announce you (spoiler) that there will be a season 2 in 2018. :)

This special plot

It is really complicated to explain Dark to friends or family and convincing them to watch because either we don’t tell enough and they don’t understand, either we tell too much and it is something called spoiler and that’s really bad! :/

But I will try anyway, so this show happens in a small German town called Winden and the plot concerns 4 families throughout several generations. These families’ names are Nielsen, Kanhwald, Doppler, and Tiedemann. The series really begins when some children of this town start disappearing. In the beginning, they try to make us think that there is a serial killer in the town who tries some experiments on these children and that they are all dead. But, throughout the episodes, we understand that something similar happens 33 years before and that some families are still horrified by what happened in the past to their close friend or family. Some people are blaming the nuclear power plant which could be responsible for these strange things but the police investigation led by Ulrich Nielsen, the man who lost his brother 33 years ago in the same conditions, evolved every day and he is really concerned and anxious because it is his son who has disappeared now.

Characters and explanations

Regarding the characters, there are characters for whom you develop empathy and identify yourself with, I think these are Jonas or Mikkel, and there are characters that you will have different feelings for them like Jonas’ mother (Hannah) or Helge Doppler and finally there are characters you really don’t know what to think about them like Noah or the Stranger because we have to wait the end of the season or even season 2 to understand who they are but I should not talk too much, just see by yourself!

With all these time travels and the number of characters, it is sometimes more complicated to understand the family links than in Game of Thrones…No it’s a joke…Well maybe not! ;) And the problem is that when we begin to know them and understand all the links between these characters, it is already the end of season 1 and season 2 only arrives in 2019, so it is likely that you forget before watching season 2.

The most disturbing thing about this show is that we don’t understand anything or almost anything in the first half of the season 1 but nevertheless we keep watching because we hope to know what is going on. The season 1 is divided into 10 episodes and that’s really in the 3 or 4 last episodes that we begin to understand something. Remember just one thing, “When” is the key of everything, the question is not How, neither Why or Who but When. Everything has an impact on our lives.

We already knew that past and presents events have an impact on the future but what if the present and future have an influence on the past which is also connected to the present. It is really disturbing, isn’t it? There is a sentence in the trailer that sums up it quite well: the beginning is the end and the end is the beginning. That’s why Dark is so intriguing and thrilling. What I also like about this kind of show is that it is not real but it is not too fictional, it is “realistic”, without a lot of “special effects”, dragons and special powers.

I hope you want to discover this show because it is worth watching, believe me!
I acknowledge this series is WTF, but remember, it is not What The Fuck anymore but When The Fuck! ;)
Keep calm and behave well in the future if you want a brilliant present because everything is connected in the circle of time. This is the “upside down” of time. :)

This is way better than Stranger things. Best show I had ever seen in this genre!!

Dark was one of the greatest show of the entire 2017.
Maybe I am too hard but I found this show better than Stranger Things in someway.
Unbelievable how they was able to create hype, suspence and a good script.
All that in Germany and not in U.S.A.!
Incredible.
Good post @jarendesta, congratulations!
