Gotta Love Garter StitchsteemCreated with Sketch.

In flat knitting on two needles, there is nothing easier than garter stitch. The late, great Elizabeth Zimmerman designed countless creative shapes using nothing but knit stitches.

The "Jughead" hat above (inspired by the iconic Archie comics character) is made in sections of garter stitch from crown to hem, increasing and decreasing in sine wave fashion to create the pointed cuff. The pattern I used is in the book DomiKnitrix by Jennifer Stafford. Garter stitch makes a thick, warm hat.

I hope you all enjoy your Needlework Monday. I will be off teaching all day, then cleaning house for Thanksgiving. Grandchildren are coming (they must be measured for sweaters!) and college student is coming home for the weekend. Lots of love!

Wow. Why you should use 5 needles if you can do the job with only 2 :-) Nice hat. I never heard about garter stitch. Looks like a hat for boots men. Thanks for sharing.

I like the shape of that hat and the brim - unusual!

That's a lovely hat, @fiberfrau !
I wish I had had access to that book when I was desperately trying to make a hat for my eldest early last year ; she promised a friend I could make her that 'jughead' hat... :D
Without a pattern I improvised ! I used this knitty pattern

http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer05/PATTtychus.html

and worked out how to make the crown... It was hard and those short rows don't look that great... but it got made and liked (a lot) apparently... Here's the photo I took before giving it away.... Needless to say I kept no notes on how I made it... I would like to see that book you refer to :

Your hat looks pretty close to the book's design. Mine ended up a little too limp, so I will use a tighter gauge next time I make one.

Oh @fiberfrau, that hat is wonderful! I, too, love garter stitch, but don’t always have the patience as it grows slowly! And eats yarn fast! We have that book at my local library. How did I miss that cool hat pattern?

I love the brim of this hat <3 And I so often now have read of Elizabeth Zimmerman but still have not read her books. As I knit combination style (not for convenience, but with every other method my hands hurt incredibly) garter stitch is only possible in knitting in the round. I like the thick texture it creates. I yesterday casted a project on with garter stitch, but later I have to change to stockinette in the round, which is not possible in combination style. I hope my fingers can endure knitting normal western knit stitches ...
Thanksgiving sounds like an amazing fest and I hope all will be harmonious and not to exhausting for you.

Really nice and well-realized. I love Jughead!!!

That kind of hat is on my list, too - though I dislike garter stitch. My garter stitches never looks as nice as stockinette :(

This was done with short rows, wasn't it? What kind do you use?

I wrap a stitch at the end of each short row to avoid holes.

Ah - the "wrap + turn". I use "German short rows" (simply called "verkürzte Reihen" in German). Though with garter stitch the method probably doesn't matter, the up + down of the rows hides any trace of them :)

I will look this up in my German knitting book. Is it easier than wrap + turn?

In my opinion - yes. But it's the way I learnt to do them first so I'm partial ;)

Here's a link to VeryPink Knits showing German short rows - she's the first place I go to when I need knitting help in English.
