Rhus typhina also called acetic tree because of its red inflorescences, pounded into powder, made flavoring with a sour taste. I once tried to make a pound of these "red candles" to powder, it really has little sour taste.
Still, we planted these trees for beauty. Broad leaves growing on vinegar tree in summer, like palm leaves. Rhus typhina please the eye its "candles" in winnter for which it also called deer tree because its branches resemble antlers.
I harvest and use these a lot! Earlier this week, I made a wild faux pink lemonade from them. I also grind the berries for a spice - or rub off only the hairs, for the highest quality spice.
I harvest the seedheads at the end of summer, before the autumn rains have started. The acid is in the little hairs and the rain will wash it all off. By late winter, the taste is pretty much gone off of each little seed.

Yes, you should definitely try using your Sumac next fall! I will make some more posts about it over the next few weeks.
