Having given that warning, there are many valuable uses for the high tannic acid content of the oak gall.

What is an Oak Gall?
The gall (sometimes called an Oak Apple) is a swelling created on the branch of an oak by the gall wasp, which injects it's eggs into a soft part of the branch. As the larvae grows the tree protects itself by forming a layer of tannic acid inside of the gall and growing new wood around it.

Medical and other uses
Many cultures around the world have used this acid as a skin treatment, relief from ulcers and toothaches, and to tan (or tighten) the cells of animal hides. It is important to know how to extract and administer it though (you can't just grind it up and add water).
