As the world’s population has grown dramatically, fishing industry becomes the commercial activity that provides with massive food production to satisfy the vast need of people’s burgeoning demands. Fishing industry generally has stimulated its annual catches with the uses of modern fishing devices to ensure that fish harvest is more effective and sufficient. This activity can adversely deprive of extensive fish stocks to decline and become extinct rapidly if there is no regulation authorized over fishery conservation. Therefore, fish conservation should be practiced to prevent further loss of fish in rivers and seas to reassure that fish species can be sustainable for the next generation.
Since fishing industry has increased its activity to make a great deal of food production to meet the demand of growing of human’s population, there is very large amount of fish stocks declining from day to day due to over fishing in illegitimate fishing equipment individualistic factors. These factors are considered as the influential causes threatening severely aquatic ecosystem, particularly fish population. Now that, the government in every nation tries their effort to develop the objective to prevent further loss of fish in seas and rivers. For instance, the United States, Canada, and other nations have established the legislation authorized over fishery conservation zone extending 370 kilometers from the shores. These zones are formed to curb annual fish harvest in fishing industry activity. Moreover, government should strictly regulate the type of fishing gears such as poison, electrical devices, and explosion to capture fish. Such illegal equipment can be devastating impacts on fish population, which kill countless either mature fish or immature fish. Additionally, the time of in which fishermen can fish is also important. Government should prohibit fishermen who are still fishing in breeding months of December to March without restriction.
Secondly, International commissions and treaties are the best ways or policies to conserve the fish. Because of losing the fish in rivers and seas, many countries which agree to work together in managing the fish resources in international water have established the commissions to protect all species, especially fish in certain areas. For example, the International Pacific Halibut Commission helps regulate halibut fishing off the West coasts of Canada and the United States. The International North Pacific Fisheries Commission promotes the conservation of all fish species in the North Pacific Ocean. Furthermore, many nations also make bilateral treaties in order to manage fishery resources in international waters too by exchanging the information on fisheries of both countries and also discuss how to conserve the measures. All of these things are the ways to prevent the fish from losing by human activities and each country also needs to obey these laws too because they can keep the fish in the suitable amount to survive in the rivers and seas, not to be extinction.
Scientific research is also one of the important ways to manage and improve fishery resources. Researchers have been trying to maximize the number of fish that can be harvested yearly without affecting the stock. In 1970s, the trawl surveys using standard vessel and gear type have been adopted by many organizations. They allow us to demonstrate a more objective abundance index and to get more accurate estimates for the population distribution of the entire region. By doing this, researcher can judge if fishing should be increased or decreased. Also, scientists study about the threatened fish species which likely to become endangered if they are not cautiously protected. When fish species are listed as endangered species, they become the subject to national recovery programs and will be placed under international protection. This kind of species regulation can helpfully rescues the fish species from becoming extinct as well.
In conclusion, it is a good idea that fish conservation should be practiced in the world wide nations. More significantly, government regulation, international commission and treaties, and scientific research should be enforced more effectively to enable the fishery resources and aquatic ecosystem to be the integral components of our heritage in the nation’s social, cultural and economical well being.
