Raising Tadpoles (Day 31) - Some Like it Hot (But Not Us)

Day 31

Having the temperature spike into the upper 80s (27-32 °C) for the last two days is more than a nuisance, it can be dangerous for African Clawed Frogs. They prefer temperatures between 68 and 72 °F. Leaving that range will not necessarily result in harm but prolonged exposure, especially at temperatures far outside of the livable range, will compromise their immune systems. This is one of the reasons maintaining a clean, properly cycled tank is essential, it gives you the wiggle room needed to handle wild swings in living conditions for them. For the time being, the air conditioner has been used to keep the temperature in the mid to upper 70s (°F). Thankfully, we'll be receiving a break from the heat tomorrow.

Speaking of inconveniences, about two months ago, I threw out several old water jugs. This made sense after buying a 5 gallon water jug, however this has now resulted in a shortage of around 2 gallons on days that the main tank requires its weekly 30% water change. Until I have spare gallon-sized jugs to fill with water, I'll have to continue using the spare tank to compensate (In my defense, I wasn't planning on raising tadpoles until the day the eggs appeared).

As for the tadpoles themselves, it's interesting to see that shortly after feeding, around 60% will continue to feed at the bottom while 40% will move to the top to feed. No need for any centralized command, they simply make spread out, avoiding overcrowding of feeding areas and allowing each tadpole to maximize their feeding potential. Once the tadpole powder has settled to the bottom of the tank, almost all the tadpoles can be seen drifting, face pointed down, as they suck in the settled food. Sometimes they'll form little lanes to avoid bumping into one another and sometimes they're nearly all going in the same direction at once, looking like tiny amphibian blades of grass.

Tadpoles look great, you guys are taking good care of them. It's wonderful how nature is and it's great that you guys are taking care of. Keep up the good work guys!

Those are really cool. I live on a lake so I see tons of tadpoles but ours are black or green. They vary in size. I want some of those African ones.

What state you in? These frogs are albino African Clawed Frogs, originally from sub-Saharan Africa, they've been in the US for decades due to their use in science for studying embryonic development as well as being used as pregnancy tests prior to the modern test being developed in the 50s. They remain popular in the pet trade today.

I know there's a fair few people who keep ACFs in Ohio. Don't personally know of any breeders local to there though.
