Hi tropas, oseven, (friends) steemers and steemians, i love this bird, i think you love them too or you will love them too.
Today we're learning about parrots, here is ten amazing facts about parrots.

IMG_20180308_113656_451.JPG

  1. Parrots have strong zygodactyl feet with sharp, elongated claws, which are used for climbing and swinging. Most species are capable of using their feet to manipulate food and other objects with a high degree of dexterity, in a similar manner to a human using their hands.

  2. The most important components of most parrots' diets are seeds, nuts, fruit, buds, and other plant material

  3. Almost all parrots nest in tree hollows (or nest boxes in captivity), and lay white
eggs from which hatch altricial (helpless) young.

  4. Parrots, are among the most intelligent birds, and some species has the ability to imitate human voices

  5. Learning in early life is apparently important to all parrots, and much of that learning is social learning. Social interactions are often practised with siblings, and in several species, creches are formed with several broods, and these, too, are important for learning social skills. Foraging behaviour is generally learnt from parents.

  6. Many parrots are vividly coloured, and some are multi-coloured

  7. Most parrots exhibit little or no sexual dimorphism in the visual spectrum.

  8. Parrots do not often do well in captivity, causing some parrots to go insane and develop repetitive behaviours, such as swaying and screaming, or they become riddled with intense fear.

  9. Parrots do not have vocal cords, so sound is accomplished by expelling air across the mouth of the bifurcated trachea, in the organ called the syrinx . Different sounds are produced by changing the depth and shape of the trachea.

  10. Some large parrot species, including large cockatoos, amazons, and macaws, have very long lifespans, with 80 years being reported, and record ages of over 100. Small parrots, such as lovebirds, hanging parrots, and budgies, have shorter lifespans up to 15–20 years.

Haha now you know about parrots. Look out for the next bird tomorrow. You can suggest birds to be learnt about by just simply leaving the name of the bird on the comment box. Love you #OGt. To know more about parrots click on the link below

I too am an avian enthusiast! In fact I just joined Steemit & a lot of my content will focus on my life rehabbing rescue parrots (yes i trained for this! Was I crazy?! Lol)

Another cool fact: Parrots are able to create a bond to their mate & flock (& owner/single human) that is so strong they can almost feel what we feel. If their mate dies, they will often die of depression. 😭

There’s one species of nocturnal non-flying parrot in New Zealand called The Kakapo (its a fun word to say!) They are endangered. They cannot fly & instead nest on the ground or under porches. They only come out at night to breed but due to lack of suitable mates in close range, they often have to be coaxed out from under porches to go to the forest nightclub for a date. This is why they’re endangered.

Parrots are so smart, they are very similar to having a 2-4 year old child who never grows up. This means a bird is perpetually stuck in his “terrible twos” of tantrums and continual learning and wanting to try new things but often with a lack of maturity to know what they’re getting into.

They’re not like dogs or cats who only learn what you teach them mixed with their instinctual behaviors, they are learning every day. That mean comment they heard on tv: memorized! That dirty joke your bad told: yep! Lol. They’re a constant hoot. Super fun but like having a kid full time. Not a low maintainable pet.

Their alone diets in captivity are super complex. I do more cooking for them than for myself. Lol. As are all the things an owner has to give up: candles, perfumes, earrings, clothes that don’t have holes in them, fireplaces, etc. They’re super sensitive to fumes. So no febreeze or harsh cleaning chemicals.

Stop by my blog and we can chat about birds any time you want. I hope to find more bird peeps around here. One of my boys wants to be a gangsta rapper someday and Idk where he learned it but we cannot get the #ThugLife out of him. 😂🙈
