Did somebody say lunch?

in #nature7 years ago

In Manaslu region of Nepal, springtime. You can see the left edge of the leaf they were eating before. So many little hairs!!! They were making a fairly loud noise too, you can hear them eating. Someone mentioned to us that there were some other kind of 'temple caterpillar' that were very valuable maybe as aphrodisiacs?? I think they did not look like these ones, but apparently the temple caterpillars go for $5 usd a piece?? Maybe somebody on here can clarify this...sure is a lot for a caterpillar in Nepal!

Great post! They are munching, munching to get ready for their transformation! Looked it up and the caterpillars are known as the "Viagra of the Himalayas"! They are harvested during the burying phase when at this stage it is called "caterpillar fungus". This rare fungus can sell for $50,000 a pound!

holy shit! wow, maybe we should bring some of that to the next Steemian party eh? :P

hey Suzi, we need some Montana representation here! There's a Women of Steemit tag happening

Oh wow thanks for the great info. I'll check it out.

Ooooh yuuuuuck. Hahaha we had theee bouts of "Tent caterpillar". Gotta just cut hem off and burn. There's no nice way about it. They can demolish a tree's foliage in a short time! Don't know if these are the same but they look similar!

Yeah I think they are...I definitely saw them wreck a few trees!

I've never seen that many caterpillars on one leaf before. Very cool. I'm not surprised you can hear them eat. We have a beta fish and if the house is completely quiet you can actually hear it chew it's food. My wife is the one that heard it first, I didn't even believe her. Who would think it was possible to hear something so small like a fish or caterpillar eat.

P.S. Looking forward to anyone knowing about the 'temple caterpillar'

Did they sound like this: "Om nom nom nom"??

i mean pretty much...except the little one on the bottom was like
tika spika tika spika tika spika!

Ah, of course. I'm not fluent in the nepalese tongue.

EEEEEEEEE Like they are beautiful but I also have a bug phobia I might cry if I saw them. :D

they'd probably like that...i've heard wild caterpillars are down with vulnerability.

O_O backs away slowly

Wow, it's incrideble🙂

very cool looking critters! wow!

If you're into those.. you may like my new butterfly video I just posted, feel free to check it out!

Oh wow! You can hear them?
Such an interesting post!

@itchykitten, someone should tell them to me polite and chew with their mouths closed :) That usually reduces the noise!

Amazing post! A lot of caterpillars..
