Swarm of bees under my roof. ( Panama )

in #nature6 years ago

Today, my wife @margaretwise heard loud noise in front of the house. When she called me, a huge amount of bees found a place under our roof. We called the fire department. They will come during the night because other way they would sting them badly.

My wife loves bees because her grandfather had apiaries on 80 hives. we've always dreamed about our hives. It would be wonderful to have your own apiary, but in a hot climate you should be very attentive, you never know who can live in a beehive. Probably the worst is the awareness that not only the warm climate favors them.

African bees are very dangerous and their history is genetically crafted.

African bees attack with a swarm of several hundred thousand individuals, sting thousands of stings in the victim. Such amount of venom destroys the body. African bees are absolute. They live in South Africa, they also managed to master the continent of South America. In North America, they mastered several states. They expand their natural range. They are replacing the European honey bee that has lived in America for centuries. Killer bees are another subspecies. They quickly go into attack and behave aggressively for 24 hours. They've never performed in America before.

They owe existence to one man. The Brazilian government in 1956 decided that Brazil would be the largest producer of honey in the world. The geneticist from Sao Paulo went to Africa. He obtained a honey bee that produced honey very effectively but was very aggressive. He returned to Brazil with 47 queens of African bees. He crossed African bees with the European ones, wanting to create the perfect honey bee, which will be the most effective bee in the world. He thought he could take the killer's instincts away. Unfortunately, he was wrong. One of his employees removed the African queens from the hives, they found themselves at large, and the workers went after them. The dream of genetics turned into a nightmare. Insects from Africa began to cross with European bees, thanks to which they created hybrids. To this day, the northern hemisphere feels the effects of this experiment - African bees quickly supplanted their cousins from Europe.

Biting an African bee is a dozen times more dangerous than a bite of a common honey bee. After the sting, give the victim the adrenaline that raises blood pressure and saves lives. After several dozen stings, subsequent organs stop working which can lead to death - hence they have the opinion of killers. They demand victims 10 times more often than their cousins, what's more - they look almost identical and it is difficult to distinguish them. Beekeepers try to prevent the invasion of bee killers, that's why they are looking for their queens. After finding them, they cut off their heads. The queen consists of 2,000 eggs a day, 600,000 a year. Within a few days, he could turn the beehive into a killer homestead. After killing the old queen, a gentler queen is introduced into the hive - a European bee. It folds eggs and the population gently.

African bees took very interesting tactics during the invasion, so they can find a hive with a weaker queen, cautiously approach the guards, slowly bring to the hive their queen and after a few days the colony consists of hybrids of the African and European bees. Their nests become quickly crowded, which is why they set out to explore new areas. In this way they can threaten a man. Increasingly, they set up their nests on the roofs of houses. Victims of the attack are often pets, such as dogs or cats. The population of these bees is constantly changing and enlarging their range. American beekeepers are trying to keep only European drones in their apiaries, so that bees are more gentle, they are not attacked like bees from Africa. Oddly, the killer bees are found mainly in warm regions, but recently they were noticed in colder areas - this confirms the thesis that African bees can adapt to a colder climate. Is it possible to invade these insects towards Europe? Scientists say it is inevitable. One bee will be enough to be transported from America to Europe on a ship or plane. When it is on the European continent and merges with local bees, hybrids are born, which are as dangerous as African bees.

A terrifying vision.

I learned a lot about the development of bee colonies by reading your post.

Have a great weekend, my friend! :)

This is scary! I didn’t know that the African bees are quite aggressive and can spread far and wide!

I will have to make sure that the bees in my garden are gentle bees!
