Common Beargrass Flowers
Xerophyllum tenax
These Common Beargrass grow in large numbers on the side of Abercrombie Mountain in northeast Washington state. In July the flower stalks reach towards the sky and fill with a profusion of the small white flowers. The scent is incredible and can be like a wall on the trail when there are large numbers of Beargrass growing together. Many of the flower stalks reach to 5 feet tall and can dwarf a child standing near them. Beargrass flower stalks are a delicacy for deer and elk and are eaten by other big game animals as well. The plant is also one of the first to regrow in an area that has been affected by forest fires which is extremely important as the root systems help hold the denuded soil in place.
