Daily Nature Fix: A Disappearing Glacier. (Original Photos)

in #nature6 years ago

Good afternoon, folks. I guess the title is awfully vague, since all glaciers are disappearing.. but tonight's Daily Nature Fix is about a small, isolated one in western Iceland called Snæfellsjökull.

The first two times we went, we never got to see it because it's usually shrouded in clouds. On our third trip, however, we ended up in the area on a perfect day with beautiful weather. From base to peak, the entire mountain was visible and we could see the glacier in it's entirety.
As you can see, it's already receding quite bit. I read that sometime around 2010, ice melt was recorded at the very peak of the glacier for the first time in human history.

We drove our little rental right up the mountain to the base of the snow and ice. It was somewhat WARM up there even. That being said, I'd give the glacier around 10 to 15 years of existence, at this rate. I'm glad we got to see it while it was still around though. These photos will be interesting (and sad) to revisit in around 20 years.

After seeing every posts of someone on their places, I love their places.
And it proves that these places is God's gift for us. :)

I disagree. These places aren't a gift to us. Humans are just a part of nature on this planet, and we're destroying it. We need to do better.

Landscape so peaceful, Excellent

Dear @custonature your nature photography is a beautiful....& very good your traveling..i like it..thanks for sharing...

What a place it is!!!!!!!!!!!!Really amazing photoshoot.

Beautiful place and sad it's desapearing.

Global warming is somewhat controversial. Being an engineer I firmly believe that we are in true danger; earth just cannot support the amount of thermal machines (cars, air conditioners, etc) and industry overloading our atmosphere with heat.
To the other side some scientists say it's a cicle that would happen anyway.

In Argentina, for example, there's the Perito Moreno glacier. Perhaps the only one that is not losing mass and maybe still growing. Until when I ask?

Thank you for your post and oppening the opportunity dos discuss this subject.

The first shot, I like the green in it even though its not trees, good contrast of clouds in the sky with a nice water reflection. nice shot! The second one has a good balance of shadow and highlight and I really like how the dark lava rock is interlaced in high contrast with the snow giving it a fine artistic value. Very good!
