In 1976 Nahanni National Park was declared the first World Heritage Site. Covering 1840 sq miles of "limitless wilderness" on the eastern side of Mackenzie Mountains in the Northwest Territoriesthe park can be reached only by floatplane or by boat up the Liard River. As a result, few people get to see some of the most remarkable scenery in the North America.

The terrain consist mainly of limestone karst, sculpted by the elements into undulating surfaces, deep sinkholes and underground rivers and caverns. At Rabbitkettle Hot Springs for example, the precipitation of minerals from warm spring water has built up a terraced mound 90ft high. At the Devil's Kitchen, the sculpting agents is the relentless wind, which has carved strange shapes in the sandstone
