ADSactly Mystery: The Fermi Paradox

Introduction

In this article, we are going to briefly explore what is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting paradoxes there is. A very popular question that most people ask themselves without ever being able to answer it, is about the potential existence of extraterrestrial life.

We can think about countless works of fiction revolving around this important topic, but so far, there has not been an official confirmation regarding if extraterrestrials are real or not, even though for years people have been reporting UFO sightings throughout the world.

I would bet anyone who takes the time to think about this topic would have their opinion and beliefs, maybe even their own inexplicable experience. This is why I thought it might be a good idea to provide some spotlight about the development of certain hypothesis and ideas from actual scientists, in which they try to provide some answers about this topic.

But before starting to discuss today’s topic, I would like to share a video about an official hearing from the United States, where it is informed that a UFO was able to disable American nuclear missiles, this hearing took place decades after the actual incident which happened in the 60s when the world was on the brink of a nuclear global destruction due to rising conflicts between the Soviet Union and the United States. The video in question is this one:

The reason I decided to include this video in the article, is because it is not a random person claiming to have experienced a UFO sighting, it is an actual ex American military named Robert Salas reporting what seems to be an encounter with unknown and superior technology that was able to somehow hack into the missile control system and disable the nuclear heads, as if the hacker wanted to send a message.

This happened while other military personnel reported seeing a UFO near the facilities doing impossible manoeuvers. It has to be said that these systems were obviously one of the most secure on the entire planet.

At 11:50s Robert Salas says “Robert Kaminsky who led the investigation at Echo flight stated that the event was virtually impossible”. We need to take into account that these people probably had the most advanced technology to date and yet, they were very surprised at what happened. At 13:24s we can hear Robert Salas saying his opinion is that the UFOs were indeed “nonterrestrial in origin.”

I would bet that similar events happened in the Soviet Union, but unsurprisingly, finding this type of content from that extinct nation is almost impossible.

What is the Fermi Paradox all about?

This paradox is about the conflict between the absence of proper proof about extraterrestrial life being real, despite the universe being a vast and enormous place that should be capable of allowing other races different than those here on Earth to exist and thrive.

Taking into account the incredibly high numbers of other planets, stars and galaxies, there should be other places full of life. The name “Fermi” comes after the scientist Enrico Fermi who first created this paradox. The actual research involved some calculations, specifically "... a series of calculations on the probability of earthlike planets, the probability of life given an earth, the probability of humans given life, the likely rise and duration of high technology, and so on. He concluded on the basis of such calculations that we ought to have been visited long ago and many times over." Source

These are some of the hypotheses that try to explain this paradox:

  • There is not enough extraterrestrial life in existence: in this case, the reason why we have not been able to find actual proof of extraterrestrial life is simply because life outside planet Earth is not as common as we could think, which means finding actual proof is also a much harder thing to accomplish. When looking at our planet, we can find living organisms pretty much everywhere, but this could very well be the exception and not the rule.

  • There are no intelligent extraterrestrials: this hypothesis consists in the possibility that alien life forms might exist, but they are too primitive for us to notice. Imagine for example the difficulty in identifying the existence of microbes in another solar system, let alone another galaxy.

  • Extraterrestrials are intelligent and self-aware, but not sufficiently technologically advanced: if extraterrestrials are real, then I believe there would be a lot of them in this category. The reason for the lack of proof would be the difficulty in identifying lifeforms leading primitive lives that don’t use energy nor emit radio waves.

  • Life in water world: it would be much more difficult to perceive alien lifeforms if they live underwater. This hypothesis made me remember about one of Jupiter’s moons called Europa, which is said to have vast amounts of liquid water underneath its surface, so who knows if there are living organisms in that water.

A curious thing related to this moon is that in the famous fiction work called Space Odyssey, it is related how there are alien lifeforms living in that moon and becoming smart thanks to one of the powerful fictitious monoliths that trigger the rapid development of intelligence. Decades later after that story was written, it is now known about the real possibility of there being primitive life in the underground water.

Conclusion

In this article, we started to explore a little bit about what is this Fermi paradox all about, and I think this is the kind of topic that once in a while makes people ask them questions about life in general. I would like to know the readers' opinion about this topic, and I wonder if some of you have first-hand experience of some inexplicable UFO sightings?

In my opinion, I do believe extraterrestrials are real, but I have never experienced anything weird, and I also believe the majority, if not all, of the sightings are not real extraterrestrials but objects created by humans. However, videos like the one I shared in the introduction can make me question myself if we have indeed been visited or not. What do you steemians think?

I have not penetrated into the knowledge of that enigmatic field: the extraterrestrial. I conjecture, by some elementary logic, that there must exist some kind of life outside the Earth. What kind of life? No idea...I've enjoyed reading fiction related to the subject such as War of the Worlds by Wells, or Martian Chronicles by Bradbury, as well as various films related to the theme. In the case of 2001: Space Odyssey, although it deals with this topic, I am rather interested in his reflection on life and its mystery (apart from his own cinematographic achievements, which are many). So much for my considerations for now.
Thank you for your interesting post and greetings, @dedicatedguy.

Hello, @dedicatedguy, thank you for sharing this article for discussion.
Fermi's paradox allows us to rationalise our beliefs and assumptions a priori through logical thinking. It is undoubtedly a healthy posture, and not just to ponder the existence of extraterrestrial life. However, passing this principle or avoiding it a little is what we science fiction writers do to create some of our plots. As a dramatic possibility, I would love to have advanced extraterrestrial civilizations. Now, as a real possibility, all the questions that can be asked from the Ferm principle seem valid to me, especially considering the supposed proofs of extraterrestrial life, so little serious. Including the official video that you place in the introduction of your article, whose repercussions are controversial.
I think that if there were extraterrestrial civilizations with enough technology to achieve the close encounter, we would already know our neighbors for better or worse.
And I have never seen anything like a UFO in my life.

Thank you for your comment mate.

I think that if there were extraterrestrial civilizations with enough technology to achieve the close encounter, we would already know our neighbors for better or worse.

Well there is something called the zoo hypothesis, where the arguments is that there are advanced extraterrestrials observing us, but they don't have contact with us due to our primitive nature and low technology.

Right, we'd be the bugs in the incubator. I like the idea for a story! :)
It's interesting. Thank you!

I think it would be very pretentious of us to believe that we are the only living beings in this universe! I have always taken for granted that extraterrestrials exist and that they are even much more intelligent than some of us who live on earth. LOL. In fact, I remember reading that the intelligence of extraterrestrials was proportional to their distance from the Sun; hence, there would be an enormous variation between the inhabitants of the different planets, from the "clumsy Mercury settlers" to the "ingenious Saturn beings". In this case, I think we should not ask ourselves if they exist but how do we find them or have them find us. Greetings and interesting topic, @dedicatedguy

I remember reading that the intelligence of extraterrestrials was proportional to their distance from the Sun

How could something like this be proved if there is not even proof for the existence of extraterrestrial life?

I think we should not ask ourselves if they exist but how do we find them or have them find us.

Yep, I think only time will tell.

Life on this earth we only recognize the existence of living things that are in one dimension with us, namely human animals and plants.
if later there are other creatures outside the three groups of course it becomes a study that must be studied more deeply.
From another perspective, I see the existence of alien-like creatures that can be of several kinds

  1. It is the result of human knowledge developed without publication. this refers to sharing apparitions that we might often refer to as UFOs. If this happens, it should be suspected that there are science and technology developers who are conducting trials.
  2. There is a possibility that the genie appears as an alien.
In various scriptures it is explained that God created creatures in the form of supernatural beings. if it is possible that this is an act of jinn, then we must see the ability of the astral realm that has been able to penetrate the human dimension.
But beyond that I have never experienced or found sightings of UFOs or aliens.

Hello, great article. I fully agree that military personnel, police officers or pilots are great sources for UFO stories, because I don't think they would lie and risk their careers for some non truth story. I am pretty sure that there is life on other planets, because space if to vast with to many galaxies and planets and it's impossible that we are all alone in it. Other question is what level of intelligence those life forms have, but I also don't think we are the smartest in universe. My opinion is that there are far more advance civilizations in Universe than we are, but contact with them could be risky for us, because who knows what they can do to us.
